J1MMIE CABANiSS WINS Detroit Derby Eligible Proves Handy Victor of Huron River Purse. Sir Jim James Finishes Second and Runamuck Third Cool Weather and Damp Track. DETROIT, Mich., May 29 Jimmie Caban-iss, Detroit Derby eligible from the stable of J. Shirley Riley, Virginia sportsman, was a handy winner of the Huron River Purse, the fifth i-ace and first of two attractive races offered at Detroit this afternoon. Sir Jim James carried E. W. Duffys locally-owned colors into second place, with Runamuck saving third for Blue Ribbon Stock Farm Stable. Nine three-year-olds, the winner and Flag Cadet being classic eligibles, were under colors, and Flag Cadet finished fourth. Cool weather again prevailed for the sport and although the racing strip was classified as fast it was slightly damp, and this was responsible for the slow time being recorded in all of the races. The gathering was larger than that of yesterday. The winner, a maiden gelded son of Or-mont and Triplett, returned 1.60 for each straight, and it was one of the several surprises during the afternoon. During the opening five-eighths of the three-quarters sprint, which Jimmie Ca-baniss covered in 1:13, Jane F., Sir Jim James and Runamuck indulged in a lively tussle for leadership. In the final sixteenth Jimmie Cabaniss forged to the front and after drawing away rapidly he reached the end well in hand. While Runamuck tired, Flag Cadet was forced to come from far back to earn fourth laurels and Blue Alice was never a factor. The biggest surprise of the meeting came with the first race when Time Flight, from Mrs. E. E. Watsons stable, lasted to beat Continued on third page. JIMMIE CA6ANISS WINS CContiriued from first page. Pillnita by a half length at the end of six furlongs. Idle Victory was third. Under the guidance of the diminutive Charley Han-auer and never far back, the winner, which was registering her first success of the year, drove around Wicces entering the stretch to be a half of a length before the fast-finishing Pillnita at the end. The winner returned 11.20 for each straight. Another surprise came with the second race, for which Idle Flirt was a well supported choice, when Mrs. A. M. Creechs Lovito beat Contrary by a head at the end of a mile and a. sixteenth. Idle Flirt was third, a half of a length back of Contrary and a length before Lady Trust. Eight fillies and mares from the lowly plater division were under colors with the winner being the chief cause of the delay before the start. However, after beginning from outside the stalls, Charley Parvin rushed her into second place and, forging ahead of Contrary, she proved the gamer in a thrilling battle that commenced nearing the final quarter and lasted to the end. Natalie Mae, one of the choices, quit badly after five-eighths and the others were never factors. Trahison, racing back to his previous good effort, won his first race in nearly two years when he carried W. J. Alfords colors to a driving victory over Capitalist, Royal Command and four other better grade sprinting platers in the third race. Jimmy Dunbar rushed the five-year-old Transmute gelding into contention after five-sixteenths of the three-quarters sprint and, steadily wearing Capitalist down, reached the end three-quarters of a length before him.
