1 HAWTHORNE TURF NOTES Horsemen have noted a rapid improvement in the riding of Henry Hauer, Arlington Heights, 111., under contract to C. E. Davidson. Hauer piloted his first winner at Aurora several weeks ago. He is seventeen and can do 102 pounds. H. G. Bedwell announced the retirement of Vacillate which he campaigned through several seasons. She will be bred to Happy Argo. W. Creese, one of the older ridors here, had his first mount of the meeting when he was astride Jules Lazard in the opening, race Thursday. Verna T., owned by F. Umbdenstock, will be vanned to Beulah Park where she will be taken over by Ike Seybold. Pointing for the Chicago Derby to be run at Hawthorne on Saturday, June 20, Calumet Farms Count Morse, runner-up to Rushaway in the Illinois Derby at Aurora, worked a mile on a fast track at the former course Thursday morning. Running easily and paced a half mile by Pharosay, the big son of Reigh Count ran the distance in 1:43. The opening half mile was negotiated in :184,k and the three-quarters in 1:16. Trainer Otto Bagley and jockey A. Fer-min left Friday night for Latonia, where the former will saddle Transmutable for his engagement in the Quickstep Handicap. Fermin will ride the Old Gold Stable sprinter in the Latonia race. J. J. OByrne expects jockey Glen Smith from Detroit Friday, Smith will do much of the riding for the OByrne stable here. Thomas Young, superintendent of the Lincoln Fields track and also Churchill Downs, comes here next week from Louisville to make an inspection of the Will County course. Cliff Burke, one of Youngs assistants, was a visitor at Hawthorne Thursday. Following ten days on the ground for rough riding in Maryland, jockey F. Faust returns to the saddle here Monday. He is with the B. F. Christmas stable. Four two-year-olds, including colts by Sun Flag, Diavolo and Sir Gallahad III., and a filly by Burning Blaze, were recent additions to the Shandon Farm Stable, trained by John J. Greely. Gold Flag, the son of Sun Flag, is a half brother to Evergold, a consistent winner under the Shandon colors. Their preparation well advanced before they left Shandon Farm in Kentucky, they promise to be ready for racing within a short time. S. Vail was the latest of the many riders at Hawthorne to swing into action. He rode his first race of the meeting when he had the mount on Lisa Belle in the fourth race Friday.
