VANDERB1LT SILKS IN FRONT Sagamore Farm Owner Scores Double at Rockingham Park. Speed to Spare Defeats Crack Band of Sprinters in -Koscben Handicap-rrBay. Bubble Disappoints. SALEM, N. H., May 29 A crack band ot sprinters met in the Roseben Handicap that featured todays program at -.Rockingham and A. G. Vanderbilt won his second race of the afternoon when Speed to Spare, an erratic son of Balko The Spare, drove home a length and a half in front of Miss Ethel Hills Deliberate. The latter had two lengths over Joseph Bartells Bubblesome, and John Hay Whitneys Enthusiasm was just a nose back of the third horse. Patriotic began fastest of the field, but was soon headed by Deliberate and dropped back to fourth place. Deliberate set the pace to the far turn, where jockey D. Knapp began to move up with the winner. He was in front as they came into the stretch and stayed there, though Knapp was forced to ride the Vanderbilt racer out smartly. Deliberate was close up all the way and held on gamely. The Bubbling Over gelding simply could not match the victors speed in the stretch. Bubblesome began in the ruck and had to close an immense gap to take third. Enthusiasm also came from far back to battle it out for third. Old Reb received unnatural support, but showed nothing, winding up next to last. The heavily backed Bay Bubble was never in the hunt, finishing ninth. The well-meant Patriotic had to go wide on the turn and that ruined whatever chances he may have had. The race was run in the fast time of :59 and the winner paid 3.40. Mrs. R. Pollards Billy I. came from behind a fast pace to take the fifth, a three-year-old event. At the end he was a length clear of C. V. Whitneys Hollyhock, Avith the early pacemaker, Johnnycake, third in the field of four that finished after Toration broke down on the far turn. Hollyhock was first to show, but Johnnycake went to the lead before they reached the clubhouse turn, with Hollyhock after him and the slow-breaking War Games third. Toration was running last and as they hit the stretch turn he broke down completely and Bobby Jones was forced to dismount. Toration, which belongs to J. K. Houssels, was found to have fractured a leg after the race. He was insured for ,000 and no steps will be taken to destroy him until an examination by insurance company representatives is made. The silks of C. V. Whitney were carried home in the sixth when Singers Folly won by a nose over Fra Diavolo. The latter beat W. W. Adams Blind Blarney two and a half lengths for second place. Marcleave ran fourth in the field of eight. Miss Dignity and Thumbs Down, heavily backed finished nowhere.
