THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 I PRIVILEGED, bay colt, by Sir Gallahad II!. Concession; property of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm. He has been among the favorites for the Kentucky Derby ever since the entries were released. However, he was fired last fall and may not be ready for the Churchill Downs classic. According to latest reports from Lexington he may be reserved for the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park. By NORRIS KOYDEN ----- , .4 Privileged, a medium-sized son of Sir Gallahad m. and Concession, by Campfire, was one of the most consistent of the topgrade two-year-olds In the country during the latter half of last season, after having failed to create much of an impression during the first three months of campaigning. With the end of the season, however, he enjoyed a ranking very little below that of Pompoon and Reaping Reward. The Calumet Farm colt graduated in a maiden event at Hawthorne in June, after having shown fair speed in an overnight race at his first asking. His winning effort from a time standpoint and from a comparison of the stock he defeated did not call for much. Making two starts at Arlington Park a month apart, he was third, beaten by Crows Flight and Stairs, in the first, and sixth in the latter event, which was the Arlington Futurity. He showed fine early speed in both races, being second turning into the stretch in the Futurity, only to falter and lose to Case Ace by seven lengths. Orientalist and Apogee were others which finished ahead of him. After an interval of two weeks, Privileged competed in the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga and displayed an improved performance. Leading at the turn into the stretch, the Sir Gallahad colt was overtaken by three horses but continued stoutly to finish in third position two lengths back of Maedic, with Third Count second. In the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, for which the track was muddy. Privileged didnt have quite so much early speed and he weakened in the stretch to land in seventh place about five lengths back of Maedic as Traulove was second and Grand Play ran third. Privileged swung into his best stride in his next start, a five furlongs dash at Aqueduct, in which he drew away in the stretch to defeat Anglo Saxon by two lengths, as Avenal was third and Top Radio fourth. His time was :59. That effort prompted his connections to send him to Narragansett Park to compete in the Nayatt Handicap. In this six furlongs dash in which he had up 115 pounds, the Calumet colt came from behind in the stretch to win going away by a length over Mr. Blaze, with Swiftply third and Savage fourth. His time was 1:115. He returned to Belmont Park to race in the Champagne Stakes, in which under his weight of 122 pounds he stepped the six and I one-half furlongs straightaway in 1:17, coming from behind in the last furlong, to score by a half length over Dogaway as Murph was third and Supply House fourth. By virtue of his two stakes victories. Privileged had to assume a penalty of three pounds in the Futurity, carrying 125 to 127 pounds on Pompoon. Several lengths back in the early stages, he improved his position in determined fashion and wound up in second place, but was beaten four lengths by Pompoon. Back of him were Flying Cross, Sir Damion, Dawn Play and many other good youngsters. After a brief rest Privileged reappeared in the Ardsley Handicap at Empire City, in which he was asked to shoulder topweight of 126 pounds, but this did not bother him as he challenged in a courageous manner in the stretch to defeat Zostera, carrying 109, by half a length as Your Honor was third and Coramine fourth. Going into the Pimlico Futurity as the favorite, he responded willingly to rating during the first three-quarters of the mile and one-sixteenth event and then rushed up to take a clear lead in the stretch. Matey came to him near the end, but he lasted to win by a nose. The decision was taken away from him because of a foul, however. He had picked up his weight, covered the distance in 1:464 and also finished ahead of Brooklyn, Billionaire, Yellow Tulip, Flying Cross and other good two-year-olds. Sammy Renick replaced Eddie Arcaro as his rider in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs, for which the track was slow, and he went to the front when ready turning into the stretch, but Reaping Reward ran him down to win by a length. Each carried scale weight. Dellor was third in the mile race, with Murph fourth. This completed Privilegeds campaign. Privileged was developed by Bert Williams, with Frank Kearns directing his training for his final few efforts. He kept on throughout the season despite ailing ankles and was fired for this trouble upon being turned out for the winter. The Sir Gallahad HI. colt is in training at the farm, but he probably will not get to the post until the Belmont Park meeting, foregoing the Derby, as trainer Kearns wishes him to have plenty of time in which to make ready. From a breeding standpoint, Privileged is bred for distance running with his sire having gotten numerous stayers, while his dam was by Campfire, second dam by Sir Martin and third by Martagon, helpful influence all. His dam,- Concession, was a half-sister to Percussion, a Latonia Cup winner, the high class stakes winner, Nimba, and White Favor, the dam of White Cockade. Many other classic horses are in the family. Against Privileged, however, as a prospect for championship honors is his unsoundness and moderate size.
