MRS. MARS WINGED VICTORY Carries Off Oak Cliff Purse, Thursdays Feature at Arlington Downs. Race Results In Biggest Disappointment of Meeting, With Odds-On Antena Finishing Unplaced. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 8. The popular orange, white and chocolate colors of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farm were carried to their third victory of the current meeting, and the biggest disappointment since the opening came with the Oak Cliff Purse, fifth and principal race at Arlington Downs this afternoon, when Winged Victory was the winner, and Antena, which was held at the prohibitive odds of 1 to 2, finished in fourth place. Mrs. Tom Marshall furnished the second and third horses in Dashalong and Texline. the former being a length back of Winged Victory and the same margin before his stablemate, which beat Antena by a nose for minor honors. Fashioned for maidens and winners of one race, the six furlongs sprint enabled Winged Victory, a son of Victorian and Grief, to leave the maiden ranks. Unlike her previous effort, when she led Winged Victory by seven lengths at the end, Antena did not possess her early speed and appeared inclined to bear out during the run down the back stretch. After reaching the stretch she made up some ground but tired near the end. DROP XN TEMPERATURE. Despite a drop in the temperature which followed a sandstorm that visited this section last night and a biting wind that kept the sunny skies from providing ideal weather, a surprisingly large crowd was present With the wind sweeping down the stretch, fast time was recorded in most of the races. Favorites were very much in the limelight and when Liberty Flight and Clap In, from E. Paul and Guy L. Waggoners Three Ds Stock Farm, carried off first and third hpnors in the Freshman Purse and fourth race, it marked the third straight success of the afternoon for the choices. Fred Turner, Jr.s Born Black split the pair at the end of four furlongs, which Liberty Flight stepped in track record time of :47t. There was a cry from the talent when Clap In attempted to bolt at the start, but he had an able companion in Liberty Flight, a son of Waggoner Bros. sire. Liberty Limited and High Flight. Craig had tHe winner in front at the start and he sprinted into a clear lead during the run to the stretch. Born Black was in second place and Clap In, which recovered quickly, was third, a half length before Lantana. At the stretch turn Clap In swung wide and Lantana moved into third place nearing the final furlong, but Thornton soon had Clap In going again and the finish found him three parts of a length in front of Lantana and a length and one-half back of Born Black. Liberty Flights margin was two and one-half lengths over Born Black. MILD SURPRISE. A mild surprise came with the opening race, run over the Waggoner course of six and one-half furlongs, when C. Andrade DXs Any Chance turned back the heavily backed Norman D., Scythe and four others. Never far back and on the inside while Be-dight and Norman D. dominated the pace, the winner, which was ridden by Sammy Roberts, drove to the front on the inside and the finish found him a length and one-half before Norman D., which beat Scythe by two lengths for second. The consistent Goldman, which races for Miss A. Van, chalked up his fifth victory of the year when he made every post a winning one in the three-quarters second race. Grimaldi, a "fielder", was second and Myron, third. Ridden by W. L. Johnson, the son of Breadman, took command at once and after sprinting into a good lead during the opening quarter, was nursed along to the stretch. Responding in fine style when roused, he reached the end well in hand and a length and one-half before Grimaldi, which chased him from the start. Hearty, a strong second choice, showed nothing and Erb quit badly after a half mile. Johnson rode both ends of the "daily double" when he brought Mrs. Sam Orrs Dark Mist to the end of a mile and a sixteenth In the third race, a handy and popular winner. Wispy was second and Chilnore third. Working her way forward on the inside, while Wispy was coasting along in the van and Chilnore was holding second position, Dark Mist drove to the lead in the final sixteenth and led Wispy by a length at the end. The latter was two lengths before the tiring Chilnore which beat Irish Image, a strongly supported second choice, by three lengths for third. Cablegram and Otra Vez which came in for good support showed little to merit it.
