THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 FLYING CROSS, bay colt, by Pennant Blessings, by Chicle; property of C. V. Whitney. Being a son of Pennant, the daddy of the great Equipoise, gives Flying Cross much prestige, and he will be watched with much interest as one of the prospective standard bearers of the Whitney Stable jn the Kentucky Derby.. By NOBRIS HOYDEN , In running third in the Belmont Futurity, In which he came out of the pack In the final furlong-, Flying Cross gave promise of developing Into a colt that might argue it out for championship honors as a three-year-old. On at least two other, occasions In hi3 dozen starts last year, the bay son of Pennant and Blessings, by Chicle, in the stable of C. V. Whitney ran smartly, but some of his other efforts werent so impressive. He did not come to the races until July at Kmpire City, but It was not until opening day at Saratoga in his third outing that Flying Cross graduated, running five and one-half furlongs in the slow time of 1:08, but defeating such as Optic, Third Count and General Markham. , , . Flying Cross wa3 unable to make much trouble in his remaining n- three starts i at Saratoga which included the Hopeful and Grand Union Hotel Stakes, nor was he able to finish in the money in a six furlongs dash at Aqueduct, the Babylon Handicap, which was won by Savage. However, in another race of the same distance at Aqueduct, he covered j the ground In 1:124 to easily defeat a field including Sir Damion. This prompted his shipment to Havre de Grace for the Eastern Shore Handicap, but he had little chance in the large field, being next to last during the first half mile. His connections did not give up hope on Flying Cross and, after running third to Camisado and Magic Circle in an overnight dash at Belmont, he was started in the .Futurity. With his weight up, the son of Pennant was well back in the opening stages, but he closed with much determination in the final quarter to finish about four lengths back of Pompoon, with Privileged just a neck in front of. him. Flying Cross then was given a slight rest until the running of the Pimlico Futurity, but he had no chance in that mile and one-sixteenth affair after being caught in a bad jam at the first turn. He suffered injuries from which, fortunately, he seems to have fully recovered, and he is going along steadily in his training at the Whitney farm near Lexington under the direction of Thomas J. Healey. He is a colt of ample size and good physique and ha3 the breeding more often found in good horses than not. Pennant has gotten such capable distance runners as Equipoise and Rolled Stocking, while Chicle and the remainder of the pedigree speaks well for the colts promise as a three-year-old. Flying Cross is a half-brother to Two Bob, a fair middle distance performer. If Flying Cross fails to come through, Whitney has another likely colt in Black Look, brown son of Whichone and Beaming, by Whisk Broom TX Mazda, she a sister to Man o War. Black Look, a half-brother to the capable runner, High Glee, was under silk3 only four times last year, going unplaced in the Juvenile at Belmont in his first start and then running five furlongs in :58i4 over the same track in defeating Goldey F. and Knight Gallant among others ln an overnight race. He was gaining in the National Stallion Stakes, in which he was fourth two and a half lengths back of Pompoon and close by Fencing and War Admiral. Black Look did not run again until the Nursery Stakes in the fall at Belmont, In which he was unplaced, and he was unable to fulfill his remaining engagements of the season because of illness. Time has caused Black Look to develop into a smart-looking prospect, and his connections have hopes that he will be the first of Whichones get to attain a reputation akin to greatness.
