WEATHER HINDERS TRAINERS Muddy Track Handicaps Eligibles for Wood Memorial Stakes. Pompoon Continues to Stand Out Among Nominees for Saturdays Race at Jamaica Works Well. JAMAICA, N. Y., "April 28. The rainy weather and muddy track condition that has prevailed has handicapped many of the trainers in preparing their eligibles for the 0,000 Wood Memorial, to be run at Jamaica, Saturday, but it is possible its first running at the increased value will result in a good contest. It is a mile and seventy yards contest and secretary Campbell gave trainers a profitable training opportunity when he put on the Victorian Purse oyer the same distance, and also for three-year-olds, that was run Tuesday. That gave William H. Gallaghers Rudie new importance and it brought John Hay Whitneys Flying Scot to the races for the first time this year. The running also just about eliminated Dewitt Pages Maedic, from consideration when he was soundly beaten. The sloppy going that prevailed was greatly to the liking of Rudie which had previously shown his best form as a sprinter, and should there be more rain, and a muddy track for the Wood, the son of Rcigh Count must be given consideration. POMPOONS LATEST MOVE. Pompoon, continues to stand out among the three-year-olds and trainer Clarke has been sending him jtlong over distances to test his staying quality in preparation for the Wood. A recent easy mile and a quarter in 2:08, was impressive from the manner in which it was accomplished and yesterday morning, at Belmont Park, the son of Pom-pey went along for a handy mile in 1:44 through the mud. Melodist, at Aqueduct, showed more speed for his trial when he handily ran the eight furlongs in 1:42 and he appears to be ready for something better than he has yet shown. Fitzsimmons may also saddle William Woodwards Riparian in the Wood for he should like the distance. Walter Carters Clodion is on edge and is considered a sure starter and Mrs. Parker Corning will be represented by Up and Doing. George Odom will probably give the Marshall Field pair, Sir Damion and Charing-Cross, another chance in the running and the Greentree Stables greatly improved Chicolorado will take beating on his recent six furlongs effort when he finished with such a brilliant winning rush. Mrs. Julia M. Lofts Mosawtre, Herman Phillips Scrooge and Alvin Untermyers Gurkha are others that are expected to race against Pompoon.
