MENOW-BULL LEA MEET Star Derby Eligibles Named for Keeneland Feature Today. Headley Colt to Be Ridden by Char-. ley Stevenson Bull Lea to Have Irving Anderson Up. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 20. The long awaited meeting of Menow and Bull Lea is at hand. They are two of four three-year-"olds named for the Mereworth Purse, which will feature tomorrows program at Keene-r land Park. Greentree Stables Birthday and J. W. Parrishs Knee Deep complete the field, which will run one and one-sixteenth miles, and its decision will go far in determining if Menow, Hal Price Headleys leading two-year-old of last year, is capable of carrying his speed over a distance greater than six and one-half furlongs, and whether Bull Lea, the hope of Warren Wright, possesses Kentucky Derby caliber. Judging by their two-year-old records, and Menows easy victory in the Trial Handicap here last week, the Headley colt appears to be a standout. He triumphed over a brilliant field in the Champagne Stakes, and in "winning the Belmont Futurity, raced to a worlds record of 1:15 for six and one-half furlongs. He was injured while training for a Maryland engagement and was put away until he underwent his early preparation at Hialeah Park. Since returning to his birthplace, Menow has continued to train soundly and came out of the Trial Handicap in fine style. His final prep for tomorrows effort was an easy mile over a muddy track yesterday morning. MENOW TOP WEIGHT. Menow will carry the top weight of 118 pounds and Charles Stevenson, Dixianas contract rider, will handle him. Although he was not a stakes winner last season, Bull Lea raced with the best of them. He finished second to Sky Larking in the "Hopeful Stakes and second to Menow in the Champagne Stakes. He came out of the latter engagement in a bad way and also was "put away for the year. Bull Lea has received his preparation over the private track at Wrights Calumet Farm, "at Keeneland. On two occasions he was vanned to Keeneland for mile trials and trainer Frank Kearns is more than pleased with his condition. As a "blowout" for the Continued on tuenty-third voge.l MENOW-BDIUEA MEET Continued from first page J race, Bull Lea breezed six furlongs in 1:18 at Calumet Farm this morning. He ran the quarter in :27, and five-eighths in 1:05. Irving Anderson, contract rider for Calumet, will handle the colt, which will carry 110 pounds. Menpw and Bull Lea are eligible to the Bue, Grass Stakes, feature of the closing days program here next Thursday. Like Knee Deep, a stakes winner last year, Menow and Bull Lea are also Kentucky Derby candidates. HAS GOOD RECORD. Starting his campaign last spring, Knee Deep finished third to Chic Maud in the Lafayette Stakes, and then moved on to Churchill Downs to finish third to Sky Larking and Teddys Comet in the Bashf ord Manor Stakes. He beat a good1 field in the Cincinnati Trophy at Latonia, and won four of his twenty-eight starts. He was under colors three times during the recent Miami season, but failed to share in any purse distribution. ! He breezed a half mile in :50, this morning. Birthday won one race last year and one at Miami during the winter and, like Knee Deep, will shoulder 108 pounds. Two other Derby eligibles will meet in the Hamburg Purse and secondary attraction. Stands Alone will be given an opportunity of making amends for his disappointing effort last Saturday, and Hal Price Headleys Dah He will make his 1938 debut. Dah He finished third to Mountain Ridge and Kings Heir in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last fall, and also received his early seasons preparation at Hialeah Park.
