THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 Miscellaneous group of this years horses of above age and a brief review of their chances among the more favored members of this division. By NORRIS ROYDEN - - -- -- -- ---- - BLIND EAGLE Bay Colt, by Black Toney Beach Talk, by Sundridge Owned by Mrs. Emil Denemark, trained by William Booth. Finished fourth in Flamingo Stakes, closing well. Performed in respectable fashion against best of his division at Hialeah Park during winter. Has not been hard raced and is good prospect for minor stakes. BOURBON KING Bay Colt, by Whichone Ancient Queen, by Archaic Owned by Hal Price Headley, trained by D. A. Headley. Won Rem-sen Handicap, third in Walden, fourth in Pimlico Futurity, set early pace for stablemate, Menow, in Belmont Futurity last year. Was second to m Lawrin in Flamingo Stakes, was well up for a mile in Widener Challenge Cup, and kept from showing good effort in Louisiana Derby by sharp interference. May make trouble in second flight of his division. BULL WHIP Bay Colt, by Bull Dog Anchor-sholme, by Golden Sun Owned by Brandywine Stable, trained by W. M. Mulholland. Started only four times at two, winning last two. Ran five and one-half furlongs at Saratoga in 1:05, best time of meeting, to defeat Nedayr and Redbreast, then maidens. Developed slowly and possibly could reach top division, being bred along quality lines. CHAPS Bay Colt, by Lee O. Cotner Island Dress, by Mad Hatter Owned by Alvin Untermye r, trained by H. Dufford. Won United States Hotel Stakes, beating Mountain Ridge, Red Glare and others, and Ardsley Handicap over Essjaytee, Dauber, etc., at a mile and seventy yards in slop. Ran with toughest company in twenty-three starts all last season and failed by little of breaking into top group. Bred for speed on top and stamina below, but doubt any considerable improvement from his two- to three-year-old form. C-NOTE Gray Colt, by Royal Minstrel Rose Petal, by High Time Owned by Milky Way Farm, m trained by Robert McGarvey. Third in Hyde Park Stakes, Arlington Futurity, fifth in Saratoga Special, fourth in Hopeful Stakes. Bred for speed and had it, just failing to prove topnotcher. Up to a mile may prove hard colt to beat, even by the best. CONGRESSMAN Bay Gelding, by Rhinock Our Carrie, by Huon Owned by Parkview Stable, trained by T. B. Young. Had high speed at two but was prevented from living up to early promise by bad feet. May yet come around to be troublesome. Has the breeding of a stayer. CO-SPORT Bay Gelding, by Cohort Sportress, by Sporting Blood Owned by B. Friend, trained by R. T. Runnels. Handy and hardy campaigner, as courageous as they come, but not quite good enough to stick it out with topnotchers, probably because of his lack of size. Will not take no for an answer when properly placed. CREPE Chestnut Colt, by Omar Khayyam Rippling Crimp, by Crimper Owned by B. F. Whitaker, trained by J. H. McCoole. Developed nicely during winter at Hialeah, but will not do in the top flight. Otherwise should be very troublesome. Has bad post manners, but runs boldly, at least for a mile. ----------- DAH HE Brown Colt, by Pharamond II. Miss Tony, by Black Toney Owned by Hal Price Headley, trained byD. A. Headley. Was close third in Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, finishing stoutly. Is awkward on his feet, otherwise could be more dependable. If he gets over his awkwardness, might move into first division as is rangy and possible stayer. DIAVOLO BOY Bay Colt, by Diavolo-: Bonny Barry, by Sir Gallahad III. Owned by Valdina Farms, trained by J.. J. Flanigan. Bred to stay but hasnt shown indications of it. Looks like good prospect for overnight events and minor stakes of medium distance. DICKERVILLE Brown Colt, by Sun Flag Spices, by Peter Quince Owned by Shandon Farm, trained by J. J. Greely, Jr. Set track record for Headley course at Keeneland in first start, v. Inning by eight lengths. Left at post in next start, did not run again as juvenile. Has trained well this spring. Has too much speed not to be some sort of a prospect. May not be router, however. EMPLOYER Bay Gelding, by Black Servant Mexcala, by Hourless Owned by Mrs. T. Ott, trained by S. B. Ott. Steady campaigner last season and runner-up in several second-class stakes up to seven furlongs. Was hard raced, but if it did not harm, he could do as well this year and even improve as his breeding is favorable. ESSJAYTEE Bay Gelding, by Brown Bud Glory of the Seas II., by Argosy Owned by Mrs. Val Crane, trained by E. Trotter. Best effort was in Ardsley Handicap, losing by nose to Chaps at mile and seventy yards in sloppy going, Dauber finishing behind him. At other times displayed fair ability, but likely will continue to be a second rater. GARRY Bay Colt, by Pharamond II. Sarah Constant, by Man o War Owned by Millsdale Stable, trained by A. Pelleteri. Ran only three times last year, being second to Mad Money and fourth to Mad Money, Mountain Ridge and C-Note in Hyde Park Stakes. Connections have good hopes for him, having engaged him well. Is good-looking colt of fine breeding. GOV. CHANDLER Chestnut Gelding, by Reigh Count Saucy Sue, by Black Servant Owned and trained by J. C. Metz. First two starts were only bad races he ran. Ran against fair company and was third after suffering interference in Arkansas Derby. Reigh Counts get improve as three-year-olds, and this fellow has every right to do the same. His future may be in front of him. GREAT UNION Bay Colt, by Sir Gallahad III. My Flag, by American Flag Owned by Mrs. E. G. Lewis, trained by T. D. Grimes. Looked impressive last spring, but didnt do so well thereafter when sent against the I topnotchers. Gifted with good speed and could improve, judging by his breeding. May not prove a stayer. GRIM REAPER Drown Colt, by Sickle Taps, by Man o War Owned by W. E. Boeing, trained by T. Horning. Easily won California Derby, at a mile and one-sixteenth, under 106 pounds, beating Laven-gro, etc., after failing to win in grade "D" company. Failed to develop as expected for John Hay Whitney and was sold at Santa Anita. Is exceptionally well bred and may continue to improve. HYPOCRITE Brown Colt, by Wrack Pretense, by Snob II. Owned by Ral Parr, trained by J. P. Jones. Defeated fair youngsters in graduation effort at Delaware Park, but remainder of form not so impressive. Is good-looking colt which should, and probably will, improve considerably, especially as he was only moderately campaigned. ISAROMA Bay Gelding, by Islam Sweet Scent, by Bunting Owned by Millsdale Stable, trained by A. Pelleteri. Is unbeaten in five starts last fall and this winter. Two of his victories were over Lawrin. Is gifted with excellent speed and much courage, but is well below average in size. Probably can stay when properly pitted. Is out of action for some time due to spread foot, incurred when beating Lawrin last time out while prepping for Flamingo Stakes. JOHAKE Bay Colt, by Jacopo Happy Gal, by Sir Gallahad III. Owned by Belair Stud, trained by J. Fitzsimmons. Ran three times in summer and three in autumn, winning maiden race over fair prospects at Bowie. Is bred to stay and develop and appears of that type. Could very easily turn out to be a prominent three-year-old. JOHN ONE Chestnut Colt, by Man o War On Her i oes, by High Time Owned by Milky Way Farm, trained by R. McGarvey. Winner of two races but best efforts were in finishing second to Bull Lea and Mar Le. Is of slow-developing type and may come around this summer to prove very troublesome. KINGS HEIR Chestnut Colt, by North Star III. Miss Jemima, by Black Toney Owned by Dixiana, trained by C. Van Dusen. Was lightly campaigned last season, running best race in Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in .finishing a neck back of Mountain Ridge. Failed against top-notch three-year-olds at Santa Anita and will have to improve sharply to do well in top division, but is all right when properly placed. Is exceptionally well bred. LAVENGRO Black Gelding, by Diavolo Inquisition, by Wrack Owned by Macaroo Stable, trained by E. L. Fitzgerald. Is well-bred horse of fine speed and considerable class but, unfortunately, possesses frail constitution which restricts him to sprints or middle distance events for best efforts. LEGAL LIGHT Chestnut Colt, by Sun Edwin Fair Advocate, by Wise Counsellor Owned by Ral Parr, trained by H. G. Bedwell. Went to Santa Anita with greater promise than his stable-mate, Sun Egret, but didnt develop quite as well, although having shown fondness for distance running. Is out of competition now due to illness incurred while shipping back to Maryland, but may come back later in season to prove troublesome in the second division. MAD MONEY Chestnut Gelding, by North Star III. Knockout, by Thunderer Owned by LeMar Stock Farm, trained by A. G. Woodman. Displayed excellent form last summer, winning Hyde Park Stakes over Mountain Ridge and C-Note and Chicago Heights Handicap over Lassator and Mar Le. Afterwards trained off but has been given long vacation and is not being hurried for spring competition. May not develop into topnotcher but is excellent prospect otherwise. MAETALL Brown Colt, by Tall Timber- Dulcy, by Light Brigade Owned by Maemere Farm, trained j by G. E. Phillips. Captured Great American and Flash Stakes and placed in several other stakes. Per- j formed creditably against best youngsters shown at Saratoga last summer, but failed to qualify for Flamingo Stakes this winter. May have had too much juvenile campaigning. MAGIC HOUR Bay Colt, by Sortie One Hour, by Snob II. Owned by Ogden Phipps, trained by J. Fitzsimmons. Was thought good enough to start in Belmont Futurity, but is still a maiden. Is brother to Split Second and possibly may develop into a formidable member of his division. MAR LE Bay Gelding, by Misstep Pouponne, by Black Jester Owned by LeMar Stock Farm, trained by A. G. Woodman. Successful in Nayatt Handicap at Narragan-sett and third in Chicago Heights Handicap. Other form was suggestive of considerable ability. Has chance to prove himself best son of Misstep yet to reach races. Like Mad Money, has been given a long rest and is not being pointed for early engagements. MYTHICAL KING Bay Colt, by Pharamond II. Gay OMar, by Gay Ronald Owned by B. F. Whitaker, trained by J. H. McCoole. Established himself as one of the better members of his division in Florida during winter, but was unable to threaten in Flamingo Stakes. Will hardly make top division, but may prove tough otherwise. NOW THEN Brown Colt, by Dis Done Meetme, by Tracery Owned by F. J. Buchanan, trained by W. J. Norton. First in Christiana Stakes at Delaware and second in Flash Stakes. Is gifted with fine speed but doesnt apparently care for distance, although second dam is sister to Whisk Broom II. PASTEURIZED Chestnut Colt, by Milkman Peake, by Sir Gallahad III. Owned by ,Mrs. W. P. Stewart, trained by- G. P. Odom. Accounted for East View Stakes last summer and was close by in all his starts at Hialeah, placing third in Flamingo Stakes. Is good-sized, well-made colt but seems to lack something to make him a topnotcher. PIT BULL Bay Colt, by Bull Dog Boursecamp, by Campfire Owned by A. G. Vanderbilt, trained by J. H. Stotler. Scored surprising victory in Eastern Shore Handicap under light weight and dead-heated I with Legal Light in Sagamore Handicap. Just failed to make first division of juveniles and probably will do likewise with the three-year-olds, although he may go especially well up to a mile. PUMPKIN Brown Colt, by Tetratema Hal- Ioveen II., by Sansovino Owned by J. H. Whitney, trained by J. W. Healy. Had too much speed for Maetall, Bull Lea and others in Saratoga Special, but was not quite good enough for a race like the Futurity. Sprinting appears to be his station, in life, although Healy may get him to go a mile. QUICK DEVIL Bay Colt, by Diavolo Double Time, by Sir Gallahad III. Owned by Wheatley Stable, trained by J. Fitzsimmons. After failing when pitted against best two-year-olds, scored easily over the mile distance at Belmont Park in the time of 1:38. Gives an indication of distance-running prowess and may develop class. SIR RALEIGH Bay Colt, by Jacopo Princess Errant, by Pennant Owned by Millsdale Stable, trained by A. Pelleteri. Beaten a nose by Nedayr in Walden Handicap when getting seventeen pounds, weakened in Santa Anita Derby but won close victory in the Consolation running over Cant Wait, Specify, etc. Finished third in Louisiana Derby with passive performance. Appeared good three-year-old prospect early in winter, but hasnt come around as expected. SPECIFY Chestnut Gelding, by Jamestown Designate, by Bud Lerner Owned, by Silver State Stable, trained by C. R. West. Was capable but not brilliant juvenile, his best effort resulting in victory over Dauber and Mountain Ridge. Was close by in most of starts at Santa Anita, but showed in longer tests that he didnt care much for distance running. SPILLWAY Chestnut Gelding, by Cohort Rail On, by On Watch Owned by J. W. Brown, trained by J. B. Theall. Gained top honors in Sanford and Saratoga Sales Stakes over good youngsters, but later found, the competition tougher. Failed to train well in preparation for Louisiana Derby and has been put away for some time. May prove useful horse when brought back. STORMSCUD Bay Colt, by Hard Tack Blustery, by Sun Briar Owned by Wheatley Stable, trained by J. Fitzsimmons. Was considered as good a prospect as Fighting Fox in Fitzsimmons barn last summer, but failed to come through against topnotchers after breaking maiden. Probably was in need of much more time to develop. Is by Seabiscuits sire and otherwise stoutly bred. May still be considered good prospect. SUN ALEXANDRIA Bay Colt, by Sun Briar Alexandria, by Pharos Owned by W. S. Kilmer, trained by W. A. Crawford. Best race resulted in victory in Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap under light weight, but was well beaten in Pimlico Futurity. Is veiy smartly bred and has good chance to improve into a very capable three-year-old. THANKSGIVING Bay Colt, by Bud Lerner Inchcape Belle, by Inchcape Owned by Mrs. Parker Corning, trained by Max Hirsch. Started only five times, winning pair of allowance races over fair youngsters, and went well in Hopeful Stakes. Could possibly develop into a contender for top honors, although breeding is not entirely fashionable. WAR MAGIC Bay Colt, by Pharamond II. War Feathers, by Man o War Owned by J. C. Brady, trained by H. Wells. Was carefully campaigned last season, graduating easily over ordinaiy field. Had no chance in only stakes attempt, the Eastern Shore. Is pleasingly bred and impressive looking. Probably has hot shown his best and will bear watching.
