FINAL TRIAL FOR BEN ALI Main Man Sent One Mile at Lexington in 1:42 See Field of Teh for Race. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 20. Main Man, J. B. "Rome" Respess four-year-old homebred son of Hildur Rose Mist, received his final preparation for his engagement in the Ben Ali Handicap, principal race on Saturday afternoons program at Keeneland, when trainer Howard Hoffman sent the Phoenix Handicap victor a mile in 1:42, breezing. Main Man was the only one of the twenty-three candidates for the mile and a sixteenth race which was on the track Wednesday morning for a speed test, and this speedy four-year-old acquitted himself in impressive fashion. The Respess colorbearer was timed the half mile in :50, the three-quarters in 1:16 and the eight furlongs were traversed in 1:42, with jockey Willis Ward in the saddle. WARD PROBABLE RIDER. Ward had the mount on Main Man in his Phoenix Handicap triumph on the opening day of the Keeneland spring season, and Is quite likely to don the purple and white jacket of the Erlanger, Ky., breeder and pilot the son of Hildur in the impending stake. A "blowout" on Friday morning is about all that remains on the training program for Main Man, but several of the others which are likely to start in the Ben Ali are. due to have speed tests Thursday and Friday mornings. Indications point to nine others facing starter William Hamilton in addition to Main Man, which will be making his bid for a double stakes score on this occasion. Those which are regarded as probable starters in the Ben Ali are Crossbow II. and Galsun, from the Calumet Farm; W. E. Caskeys Royal Sortie, A. L. Ferguson and Mrs. A. Herndons Josh, A. B. Hancocks Recussion, W. M. Ingrams Broadway, Milky Way Farms Mountain Ridge and Greentree Stables Drowsy.
