ARLINGTONS NEW RACE John Hertz Announces Inaugural of 5,000 Added Arlington Cup. Management Reserves Right to Cancel Event 10 Days Before Running if Field Is Unsatisfactory. Believing that only horses worthy of winning them should race for big prizes, John Hertz, chairman of Arlington Parks executive board, has announced the inauguration of a 5,000 Arlington Cup, a weight-for-age race at a mile and one-quarter, with the reservation of the right to call it off ten days before its running on July 30 if the prospective field is "not to the satisfaction of the management." "In step with many other turfmen in this country, the Arlington Park directors feel that it is a ridiculous situation to find a field of horses which have been running in claiming races for minor purses competing for a prize of 5,000," declared Hertz. RESERVE CONDITIONS. Maj. Louie Beard, head of the Whitney racing interests, first suggested the "reserve" conditions of the new race to Hertz and his Arlington associates, feeling that it would be in keeping with the movement for weight-for-age races. At the same time it would serve as a sounding-board to discover whether owners of the better-grade horses were sincere in their pleas for weight-for-age conditions. "If owners of the better horses want weight-for-age races we will provide them, but if they do not mean to run their horses we must take that attitude as the answer that handicap races are more popular," said Hertz. Nominations for the 5,000 added Arlington Cup, which is for three-year-olds and upward, weight-for-age, at a mile and a quarter, will close June 1. If the prospective field is not of suficient caliber to meet with the satisfaction of the Arlington officials, it will be declared -off Wednesday, July 20.
