THIRTEEN NAMED FOR 2,000 ILLINOIS DERBY I • Fridays Favorable Weather Makes Fast Footing for Race Possibility , — Greentree Stable Entry of Birthday and Gangplank Probable Favorite — Mountain Ridge Slated to Carry Top Weight of 120 Pounds ► AURORA, 111., May 27.— Thirteen three-year-olds, a well matched array of invaders and horses which have been racing here since the local season opened, are listed among the entries for the 2,000 Illinois Derby which will be renewed over a mile and a furlong at the Fox Valley course tomorrow afternoon. The stake, which is expected to have one of its most interesting runnings, features a card of eight events bringing to a close the twenty-four day meeting of the Fox Valley Jockey Club, and if favorable weather prevails the largest crowd of the season will be on hand to see the sessions finale. Of the thirteen which were named through the entry box this morning only two or three are doubtful starters, but it would not be a surprise if all start. PROBABLE FAVORITE. The probable choice for the stake is the Greentree Stable entry of Birthday and Gangplank, but strong support also is expected for Milky Way Farms Mountain Ridge and John One, Calumet Farms Taxes, and John One, Calumet Farms Taxes, and and P. L. Kelleys Count Valiant and Gov. Chandler, which will race in the colors of Mrs. K. Mamsay after which he became the sole property of the Blue Moon Stable, all of which have shown at one time or another Continued on thirty-fourth page. Rounding out the list of entries are Frank Serembas Fairflax and My Feng, Blue Ridge Farms Elooto, Wesley Sears Farms Xavier, James Emerys Dolly Val, and A. R. Boms Silver Sarah. Under the conditions of the race Mountain Ridge, whose stablemate, Case Ace, won the Illinois Derby a year ago, will shoulder top weight of 120 pounds, but he will not be conceding much to most of his rivals. The imposts scale down from this figure to 113, the assignments of the only two fillies in the I field— Silver Sarah and Dolly Val. All of the horses have come up to tomorrows engagement in excellent condition, and a feeling of confidence this morning pervaded most of the camps of the Derby candidates. The general consensus was that the race is an open one and a thrilling battle was expected to develop every step of the way. While the Greentree entry is expected to rule the choice of the public. Birthday and ! Gangplank are not expected to be prohibi-j tive favorites, for victory is in no way conceded to this fashionable establishment. The Derby has aroused considerable interest among racing devotees, and the manage-[ ment has hopes of attracting a capacity crowd for the seasons final program. The appearance of the sun this morning encouraged officials of the track in the hope that pleasant weather would prevail tomorrow If no more rain falls the racing strip should be fast, even though it did receive another drenching last night. Surrounding the Derby are seven other well-filled events, among them a handicap at six furlongs which is to engage a fleet band of speedsters. Post time for the first race will be 2:15 o clock, the same as on other days.
