IDEAL WEATHER AT DOWNS Large Crowd Present for Fridays Sport — Santan Earns a Photo Decision Over Black Buddy. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 27.— With ideal weather prevailing and bright prospects for interesting sport as several races on the program brought out well matched fields from among the better grade performers, there was another large crowd at Churchill Downs as todays racing got under way. The principal events were the Iroquois Purse for three-year-olds and up, and the River Road Purse fashioned for two-year-olds. In the former six good sprinters got together over six furlongs while seven engaged at five furlongs in the River Road. While only two races were run at distances greater than seven furlongs and small fields provided seven of the eight contests good racing resulted. The longer contests were the seventh, at one mile and one furlong and the eighth over a distance of one-sixteenth of a mile shorter. Only one race, the first, was at seven furlongs with two others besides the Iroquois run over the six furlongs course and a second for two-year-olds also decided at five furlongs. Although the day was warm and pleasant breezes swept the course. Having benefitted from recent rains the track although classed as fast the past several days, probably was more conducive to fast time than at any time during the meeting. Scoring his third "win" of the meeting, , Santan earned a photo decision over Black Buddy in the opening race, the two veterans hooked up turning into the final straight- j away and their duel over the quarter-mile I was one of the highlights of the racing. j While battling head-to-head and finally, nose-to-nose through the stretch they left ! the others of which Through Fairly was third, far behind, the latter being ten lengths away from them at the wire Billies Orphan Say When and Nogalo completed the field, the latter perfoming in most disappointing fashion after being installed favorite. •
