SEABISCUIT AMONG EIGHTEEN LAUREL EUGIBLES Late Weather Conditions Point to Fast Footing for ,500 Stake The Chief, Finance, Aneroid and Nedayr Opposing Howard Star in Mile Contest Maryland Fur turity Shares Top Honors on Card LAUREL, Md., Oct. 14. The name of Seabiscuit was passed through the entry box for the one mile Laurel Stakes, to be decided at the plant of the Maryland State Fair, Inc., tomorrow. The race, which is for all ages and carries an added value of ,500, attracted eighteen entries, evidence of the fearlessness with which the others regard the C. S. Howard ace. Admittedly unfavorable to a track that is anything but fast, the entry of Seabiscuit was made after a light shower had fallen and while the weather was threatening. Later weather conditions, however, gave j rise to the prediction that the strip would be fast for the running of the special, which will be contested for the twenty-fifth time. Trainer Tom Smith stated that he would van Sea-biscuit from his training quarters in nearby Pimlico this afternoon. Smith holds a strong hand in the stake as he also named the Argentine Kayak H. for the Laurel. The three-year-old had little difficulty in accounting for major honors in an overnight event at six furlongs over this strip yesterday, and should prove an able running mate to Seabiscuit, should the latter start, and a formidable contender in his own right, should the son of Hard Tack be withdrawn. In last years running of the Laurel, Seabiscuit and Heelfly finished on even terms, to split the purse. Earl Sande shipped Maxwell Howards The Chief here for the Laurel. Suited at the distance and under 116 pounds, the three-year-old son of Pennant should give a good account of himself. Of the others, Mrs. B. F. Christmas Idle Miss, four-time stake winner, appears the most formidable. BIG FIELD OF JUVENILES. Co-featured with the Laurel is the Maryland Futurity. This is a six furlongs dash for youngsters foaled in the state, for a purse of ,000 added. Sixteen juveniles have been named, with favoritism likely to fall to A. G. Vanderbilts Balkan War, although stiff competition can be expected from W. L. Branns Challedon. Challedon was overmatched in the Eastern Shore but graduated easily from the rankS of the non-winners in his previous start at Narragansett. Balkan War raced over the track here Tuesday and making his first start since his campaign on the West Coast, raced Lady Solace to a head decision. He should benefit by the effort to come to todays engagement in peak condition.
