BRIERY SHOWS IMPROVEMENT Scores a Convincing Victory in the Coventry Purse at Narragansett. Jimmy Lynch Bides Great Finish to Bring His Mount From Far Back to Beat Rita Z. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 14 Mrs. P. A. Shaws Briery, which was well beaten when held at 4 to 5 and ridden by "Spike" Evans the other day, showed remarkable improvement when held at 5 to 2 and ridden by Jimmy Lynch this afternoon, to score a convincing victory in the three-quarters Coventry Purse, which featured the card at Narragansett Park. Lynch, riding a great finish, brought the By-Pass II. juvenile from far back to win by a length over Calumet Farms Rita Z. It was a warm battle for second place, with Rita Z. taking that award over Ben Listers Grisette in the final stride by a head. Hasty Star, who took a long early lead as usual, finished fourth, another length and one-half back. The winners time was 1:12. Although Mrs. Shaw won a race, she lost a horse, R. Ramsey haltering Briery for ,500. It appeared to be an excellent investment. Hasty Star streaked away from the gate in the event, and opened up a three lengths lead on Grisette in the run to the far turn, with Briery next to last. The latter did not begin to move up until the three-eighths post was reached, and then he drove past horses to take third place, with dead aim on the leaders. As they straightened away for home Hasty Star was through and Grisette assumed command; Briery moving into second place. Grisette and Briery fought stride-for-stride to" the sixteenth post, where Lynch really went to work on the winner, to score draw-Mng away. The day was dark and dreary, with intermittent showers falling during the afternoon. The track remained fast, but the weather reduced the crowd to a minimum. W. Hirschensohns Walter Morton and W. W. Adams Mixwell fought it out in front for the entire six furlongs in the Hope Valley, that was fourth on the card, with first one head and then the other showing in front. Krpyitz drove Walter Morton to the lead right at the wire to score by a nose in a thrilling race. A. J. Halliwells Merry Caroline finished third.
