j 1 THIRD DEGREE INFORM S Second Winner at Odds-On Ridden by Eddier Arcaro. Greentree Youngster Qualifies for Breeders Futurity at Keeneland Gives Real Speed Display. LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 14. Third Degree, , which landed third honors in the Belmont Futurity, qualified handsomely for his engagement ? in the Breeders Futurity when he . carried the Greentree Stable silks of Mrs. Payne Whitney to an easily-attained and popular victory in the Chilesmere Purse, principal attraction at Keeneland today as summer-like weather again prevailed. Under Eddie Arcaro and giving that lad a double on odds-on choices, the son of Questionnaire ; . and Panache ran the six furlongs in 1:11 to triumph by six lengths over the : Valdina Farms Range Dust. Morris Ve-hons Smart Trick was another head away in third place, as Steel Heels was fourth! : among the seven speedy juveniles completing the field. MOVES UP ON OUTSIDE. As Calexico sprinted into a clear lead during the run down the back stretch, Arcaro placed Third Degree at his heels, permitting him to advance on the outside. The Greentree horse went to the pacemaker easily on the outside and put him away after a short brush, thereafter drawing away to such a long lead that Arcaro was able to take him in hand through the final sixteenth. When Calexico tired, Range Dust moved into second place but had to be ridden out to stave off the late bid of Smart Trick. Steel Heels also finished well to land inv j fourth position. Others in the field were Calumet Red and Chandera, but neither made trouble. A spirited contest was provided in the Melrose Purse, the secondary feature, with the verdict going to Mrs. E. Haughtons Bustle by inches over King Ranchs Chocalula, as H. H. Battles Chance Star was just a head away and a half-length before Tiger Teddy. Continued on thirty-fourth page. THIRD DEGREE IN FORM Continued from first page. The race was for three-year-olds at six furlongs, with Chance Star ruling a slight favorite. The victory of the daughter of Pharamond n. Scuttle was the second of the afternoon for Mrs. Haughton and her capable apprentice rider, Charles Charlton, the combination having previously clicked with Barbara S. HEADLEY TRIUMPH. Grand Pageant, H. P. Headleys juvenile colorbearer, the first odds-on favorite of the meeting, won the opening race in simple fashion. Shouldering jockey E. Arcaro in opposing seven other two-year-olds, the daughter of Supremus romped to a four-length victory at the end of the six furlongs. Red Moss was second, while Quick Quick captured third laurels. The Headley filly moved from the starting gate alertly and took the lead from the inside after the first sixteenth. Red Moss moved into second position in the stretch and held Quick Quick safe by only one-half length, taking the place. C. W. Pershalls Brown Ben probably gained a lucky victory in the second race, in which he finished a half-length before the strongly closing High Top, the favorite, at the end of the six furlongs. Holton closed rapidly in the stretch to capture third honors, three-quarters of a length before Neat Play. Barbara S., representing Mrs. Ed Haughton, and the favorite, won the third race, a dash of six furlongs engaging nine ordinary three-year-old platers, by a head over Juraboy, owned by Keene Daingerfield, Jr., as Mrs. C. H. Clearys Fair So was slightly less than a length away in third place. Texas Tony was fourth, after being blocked twice. The Haughton-Charlton combination completed a triple when Sadie F. won the sixth race in neat fashion. She also was the third odds-on favorite of the day to earn brackets, handily defeating Alice Highland, Texas I Rose and two other platers at six furlongs.
