AUDLEY GIRL ADOPTS DONKEY Hirsch Filly Becomes Foster Mother to Tiny Companion. Refuses to Eat Unless Merry Christmas IS J Close at Hand Donkey Likes Pampering. BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 11. The Max Hirsch stable has just acquired a new mount v which they would never have bought or i claimed a mount that would do only for a 6-year-old or younger rider. This new addi- j tion to the string wont be entered in any Pimlico contest this year, unless it be the annual Turf Writers Race, scheduled for the -t morning of Thursday, November 10. The name of the animal, of which the Hirschs are not too proud, is Merry Christmas, and shes a donkey, of all things. f Friends asked a favor of the Hirschs just that they take the donkey out to the West Coast to two little children who wanted it for a pet. It wasnt much to ask, and the Hirschs said "Yes" with an alacrity which they regret, because it begins to look as if Merry Christmas were a steady Hirsch boarder and that the kids on the West Coast are out of luck along with the Hirsches. NOW A FAVORITE. Merry Christmas may have arrived a forlorn orphan, but shes now a favorite, petted child of Audley Girl, a mare trained by Mr. Hirsch. The donkey was sent to the stable only three days ago, but already the mare refuses to eat if her little darling is not in the stable with her; already she has developed the most violent, protective attitude if j anyone comes near the stable and her pre-! cious Merry Christmas. The unforeseen situation is being accepted philosophically by the stable, which finds itself with another mouth to feed. Audley Girl, who only a few days ago was an irre- sponsible sort of soul- without a care in the world, is the anxious foster-mother with a heavy responsibility so she thinks. And Merry Christmas is having a wow of a time. She may not know what its all about, but she likes it. Shes pampered and petted by Audley Girl and by all visitors who know whats good for them. She nibbles sugar, shes inquisitive about pencils, bundles and life in general. Shes a cute little gray animal with a charming manner which makes it easy for everyone to see why Audley Girls life is going to be one continuous Merry Christmas. :
