: j j j 1 j HAWAII ESCAPES TIDAL WAVE HONOLULU, Hawaii, Nov. 11. Hawaiian residents breathed sighs of relief today after a reported tidal wave from a strong earthquake in the vicinity of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, resolved itself into a mere succession of minor tide disturbances. Word-of- mouth exaggeration of warnings from seismologist caused widespread alarm, but no panic. One public school of the Island of Maui was dismissed and others were warned to be prepared for an emergency. Maui re- ported a variation in water level of two and a half feet. Elsewhere in the island the variation was only nine inches, with seventeen minutes between waves, indicating the disturbance extended 250 miles in length, according to commander J. H. Peters, in charge of the Geological Survey Bureau. There were no reports of damage. The waves began at 2:55 p. m. yesterday and receded at 4:30 p. m., approximately six hours after a severe quake was recorded on instruments throughout the world.
