FOURTEEN IN 0,000 EVENT Large Field, Minus Ligaroti, Named to Start in Worlds Fair Handicap at Bay Meadows. SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 11 Fourteen horses will face the barrier for a 0,000 purse at Bay Meadows Saturday afternoon. They have been entered in the Worlds Fair Handicap, piece de resistance of the meeting, and the winner will have his name added to the honor roll of the race alongside Sea-biscuit and Star Shadow, previous victors in the contest. Ligaroti has not been named as his stable connections seemed to fear that the horse that ran Seabiscuit such a thrilling race at Del Mar could not handle 131 pounds against such as Main Man, Today, No Dice, Sweep-alot and a few others. Jockey Richardson, regular rider of Ligaroti, will have the mount on Today and may have a winner after all. Today, staging a come-back at this meeting, was a galloping victor in a six furlongs sprint in his first outing and last Saturday finished second to the speedy Dogaway in the sprint Burlingame Handicap. Ligaroti was third in that contest. Main Man is top weight in the Worlds Fair and will have the hard-riding Jack Westrope at the helm. Westrope flew to the Coast especially to ride the Mayer star when jockey George Wolf was unable to make it. Westrope, in the estimation of Earl Sande, is one of Americas greatest riders. A surprise announcement anent the Worlds Fair Handicap jockey was made when it was learned that Charlie Corbett, star pilot for the Anthony Pelleteri stable, would pilot Quick Devil, running-mate of Main Man and Today in the event. Corbett has been visting with relatives in northern California and exercised Quick Devil Friday morning. The veteran won last years Worlds Fair Handicap aboard Star Shadow. With Corbett, Richardson and Westrope as jockeys, the Mayer-McCarthy entry of Main Man, Quick Devil and Today figure to be top-heavy favorites in Saturdays race.
