Annibal added the Manly Steeplechase Handicap to his imposing list of triumphs, headed by the Grand National, in giving Thomas Hitchcock his first score in that race this afternoon at Pimlico. Clearly the best, the five-year-old gray gelding, by Chubasco and Alliance, was ridden in clever fashion by the amateur, Rigan McKinney, to finish the two miles and a half journey five lengths ahead of Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Rocky Run, as F. Ambrose Clarks Torturer was another half length away. A good-sized crowd was present to witness the Manly, whose eighteenth running featured the semi-final program of the Maryland Jockey Clubs autumn meeting. Clear but cooler weather prevailed. With ,000 ,in added money, the Manly had ,730 for Annibal, increasing his seasons earnings to 1,800. It was his sixth victory in seven starts during the year, his only downfall having occurred when this same McKinney was unseated in a race at Delaware Park. . j SHOULDERS 164 POUNDS. t Although shouldering 164 pounds, the high- est impost he yet has been called upon to ! carry, the Hitchcock jumper was not at any i disadvantage and he ran the long course in .4:57. - McKinney, who won the Manly seven years ago with Green Cheese, did hot become flustered when his mount got off last in the field of seven and restrained him in last place for a turn and a half of the field. During the last mile Annibal picked up his field gradually, but went to the front with a rush rounding the final turn and drew out to win with speed in reserve. - Rocky Run was sent to the front immediately after the start and, although well rated in the pacemaking role, he was unable to stave off the winners challenge, but managed to outgame Torturer for the place When the latter challenged in the last five , furlongs. Rioter, stablemate of the winner , and with him installed at odds of 7 to 10, j attempted to force the early pace, but he ; made frequent mistakes and tired in the final mile. Of the other starters, Snobby , -Scamp lost his rider at the fifteenth fence, Buck Langhorne fell at the seventeenth and Good Chance lost his rider at the last of the I eighteen obstacles. E. Roberts, rider of Good Chance, suffered a bruised thigh, brush i burns about the eyes and a severe shaking ; up. The others were not hurt. ! REAL BUMPING MATCH, i A bumping match with Up the Creek almost cost Double Back first honors in the Jennings Handicap, the supporting feature, as Marriage stole through on the inside to -finish strongly, but George D. Wideners filly managed to last out the six furlongs by a nose over Mrs. S. C. Registers colorbcarer .as the Milky Way Farms colt, the favorite, was another neck back. Buds Bell was a well-beaten fourth in the field of six. Double Back and Up the Creek succeeded in putting Grey Nurse away in the opening quarter and then began a duel in which Continued on twenty-sixth page. As Up the Creek hung in the final sixteenth, Marriage came forward gradually after saving ground all the way and all but overtook the daughter of Haste and Deuce.
