0,000 BOWIE HANDICAP FINALE AT PIMLICO JOk - Aneroid and Esposa Carrying Weight Equal Under the Scale Sturdy Daughter of Espino May Rule as Public Choice Strong Wind and Sunshine Point to Fast Footing for Rich Stake Race 1 PIMLICO, Md., Nov. 14. An eminently successful meeting at the onetime Hilltop course will be concluded tomorrow with the Bowie Handicap, a trying test of one mile and five furlongs for members of the three-year-old and upward division, topping the final program. This 0,000 added affair long has been one of the most important distance races decided at the local grounds each November, dating back to 1909 when FitzHerbert galloped off with principal honors. Tomorrows renewal, the twenty-fifth, has attracted ten entries, with Aneroid the highweight of the affair under 120 pounds. However, Esposa, with her 117, is carrying the same burden on the scale. It is more than likely that the sturdy daughter of Espino will rule the public choice, despite her two recent stake defeats in this area. The going was muddy for both those events, and it is probable she needs a fast track to bring forth her best effort. She gained no little prestige with Marylanders last November when she whipped Seabiscuit in this very same race, one in which she set a new track record. The sun was shining brightly this afternoon, with a stiff wind whipping across the grounds, there being no indications of rain in the offing. All of which points to a fast footing, a condition which should be vastly to the liking of William Zeigler,s mare. SPARKLING RECORD. No candidate for the Bowie possesses a brighter record during the last two seasons than the six-year-old daughter of Espino and Quick Batter. During 1937 this game mare chalked up no less than eight major triumphs. In addition to the Bowie, she also accounted for the Saratoga, Delaware, Scars-dale, Brandywine and Lady Baltimore all handicaps as well as the Whitney Memorial and Wilson Memorial. This year she was first home in the Butler and Champlain Handicap and the Hawthorne Gold Cup. While the latter race was won over a heavy track, her opposition was indifferent. Esposa, judging from the work tab, comes up to tomorrows engagement in first rate condition. This morning she sharpened up with a half in :50, very handily, while on Friday she breezed a mile and a quarter in 2:09, the, half in :50, three-quarters in 1:16 and the mile in 1:42. With Nick Wall in the saddle, she will be in familiar hands. RETURN TO TOP FORM. Aneroid showed a return to top form in accounting for the Riggs Handicap, at a mile and three-sixteenths, two Saturdays back. The track was muddy for that race and this was to the liking of the son of The Porter. It was his third stake of the year, as he had taken the Gittings Handicap over the Pimlico oval during the spring session and the San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita last winter. John A. Manfusos five-year-old, is going soundly again and is apt to beat any mans horse when right. This was proved in the Suburban and. the Carter Handicap a year ago. Lesser 1937 stake triumphs were in the Harford and Baltimore Spring Handicap. His final half this morning was done handily and on Saturday he went a mile and a half in 2:40 in similar fashion. The first half was completed, in :51, three-quarters in 1:18, mile in 1:44 and the mile and a quarter in 2:12. On paper the above named pair appear to have a considerable edge oyer their rivals, but under Charlie McLennans weight arrangement the two will have no easy task turning back lighter-weighted .rivals. Chief of these, in the writers opinion, is Lucky Omen, a three-year-old from the Fairfields Stable of Mrs. Willis Sharpe Kilmer. This son of Gino and Sun Miss lan away from his company in a mile and a furlong handicap on Saturday and worked out a mile and a quarter in 2:05. It appears that he is nicely weighted with 107 as his portion and it wouldnt be surprising to see the Bowie bring about the first stake triumph of his career. COUNT ARTHUR UNCERTAIN. Count Arthur, a good cup horse of other seasons, but an uncertain sort this year, might be troublesome if he would race kindly, as he has proved he can go the route. Still, he was beaten by Mr. Canron in the mile and a half Grayson Stakes, when the pair followed High Velocity in the order named, so it is improbable he can handle the Catalan colt tomorrow. The latter drops seven pounds, with Count Arthur having six off. Each breezed a half in :50 this morning. Jolly Tar and Regal Lily both were tested in the Grayson, with the first named three-year-old turning in a considerably better race than the filly. He came from last place to finish fourth, and if he goes as well tomorrow may prove a strong factor. Little can be said for the daughter of Man o War and the same holds true for the Denemark entry of Chasar and Two Bob. Both are in very light, but appear outclassed. The Bowie has provided many first rate contests in the past and has been won by many top grade performers. If tomorrows renewal proves as thrilling as that of a year back, -when Esposa whipped up to register a lucky victory over Seabiscuit, then there can be no cause for complaint from the customers.
