SANFORD HAS GOOD RECORD Three, Years Absence From Training1 Ranks Fails to Affect Skill. Had Successful Season With Horses of J. Graham Brown, Weil-Known Louisville Sportsman. LOUISVILLE, Ky Nov. 14. That three years absence from the trainers ranks did not dull his skill, was demonstrated this year by Thomas Sanford, trainer of J. Graham Browns Brown Hotel Stable. Sanford deserted the trainers ranks to become an official at Rockingham Park, Epsom. Downs, Las Vegas, Nevada, Beulah Park and other tracks, but upon the invitation of Mr. Brown, selected seven yearlings at the 1937 Lexington auctions and later purchased the three-year-old Doctor Tim and the two-year-old At Home, from Irvine Kort. He was trainer for Mr. Brown when the Louisville hotel owner raced one of the leading racing stables several years ago and upon Mr. Browns temporary retirement from racing, Sanford was induced to accept j the position of placing judge at Rocking- I ham Park. I With the small string of young performers, Sanford has been quite successful. Hello Cap won the Fort Thomas Handicap at La- tonia, which was his fourth and final victory of the year. Courtesy First and Quick Quick were winners during the Chicago campaign and Ours graduated from the maiden ranks at Latonia. Bad racing luck prevented Brown Corner and At Home from winning at the recent Churchill Downs meeting, while The Greeter ran a smashing race at Keeneland. He is a long-striding son of Petee-Wrack, and Sanford believes he will develop into a corking three-year-old. Doctor Tim won a race at River Downs, so only At Home, Dont Disturb and The Greeter failed to enter the winners circle. LEAVER FOR NEW ORLEANS. Today, Sanford sold At Home and Quick Quick to Nick Burger and Harry Murdock, and with the others of the Burger and Mur-, dock band departed for New Orleans. After the close of the Latonia season, Sanford sent Hello Cap to Mrs. Thomas Murphys Golden Maxim Place to join Courtesy First, and after the Keeneland meeting, The Greeter was vanned to Jefferson County Haras. At the Lexington sales, Mr. Brown purchased seven yearlings and they are being broken by Sanford at Churchill Downs. They are a brown filly by Jean Valjean Filly Mignon, a bay colt by Sun Flag At Top, a chestnut colt by Head Play Tiberton, a bay filly by Diavolo Blustery, a bay colt by Swift and Sure Shy, a chestnut colt by Noah imp. Picra, and a brown colt by Sun Flag Madcap Marvin. Sanford also has a black, daughter of Sweep All Ma Yerkes. Ma Yerkes was one of the fastest juveniles of her age and but for being cut down at the opening of her I three-year-old campaign, probably would have been a top ranking three-year-old. The Diavolo colt is a half-brother to 1 Stormscud, stakes winner this year. Hello Cap and The Greeter will be taken up the middle of January and, if their early training justiifes it, they will be named for the Kentucky Derby.
