09 TANF0RAN INAUGURAL TODAY San Bruno Track Takes Up Where Bay Meadows Leaves Off. Expect Such Stars as Seabiscuit, War Minstrel, Two Bob, Finance and Others Shortly. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Nov. 14. John W. Marchbanks Tanforan track, where racing starts Tuesday, is undoubtedly in for one of the top meetings of its long history. Horses galore from all parts of the land are stabled on the grounds, while expected to j arrive shortly after the session gets under way are such stars as Seabiscuit, War Min- j strel, Specify, Two Bob, Star Shadow, Finance and many other good ones that did not appear at Bay Meadows. On the grounds at the present writing is a South American horse that Horace Luro, noted Argentine breeder, believes to be just as good as Ligaroti. The animals name is Vino Puro, and he was the outstanding animal on Rio de Janeiro tracks last season, according to reports. Luro recently brought Vino Puro and four others from South America. James P. Waters, San Francisco sportsman, has an interest in the string. If Vino Puro lives up to advance notices and Ligaroti remains as good as he was in winning the San Rafael Handicap at Bay Meadows, the home talent had best look to their laurels. Of course, Seabiscuit is deservedly the recognized champion, but the South Americans have a chance to gain secondary honors notwithstanding the fact that War Minstrel, which will head the Denemark shipment soon to arrive, holds a decision over the Biscuit. OPENING DAY HANDICAP. John Maluvius, a California native son, getting out his first race program on a major track in the state, came up with a smashing bill for Tanforans inaugural. At least three of the events are made up of horses of handicap caliber, and the Opening Day Handicap brings out such good ones as Brown Jade, Indiantown, High Vote, Townsman, Routine, Time Flight and others. Brown Jade is top weight with 114 pounds. The Opening Day Handicap is at six furlongs and carries a purse of ,500. It is for all ages. The management has announced J that the first race will go to the post each day at 1:30 p. m. It has also been announced that there will be no huddles in Tanforans band box stewards stand this season, unless stewards J. K. Macomber and James F. Gallagher, Continued on twenty-seventh page. TANFORAN INAUGURAL TODAY Continued from first page. both rather portly gentlemen, collide. Stewards James C. McGill and Charles S. Hart-well, the lanky members of the high order of racing moguls, have been moved elsewhere. McGill will be perched in a tower on the back stretch where the balmy breezes from the bay will get a full sweep at his whiskers, while Hartwell will occupy a similar "crows nest" at the head of the stretch. McGills stand has been painted orange and Hartwells a sort of a Paddy Slavin green. JOCKEYS WARNED. With the above set-up any boy who gets away with rough stuff will be heralded as a second Houdini, as either a steward or a patrol judge will have their eagle eye on him at every post. Aside from those already mentioned as stewards, the following will function in an official capacity at Tanforan: John Mal-uvius, R. E. Leighninger and Barry Whitehead, placing judges; Ed Thomas, starter; Fred Cantrell and Russel Sanders, patrol judges; Wesley Meyers, entry clerk; J. C. McGill, paddock judge; and James McDonnell, timer. And now we will wade into a few statistics from Bay Meadows and bid au revoir to that track until next spring. The Bay Meadows daily average pari-mutuel handle was just above 47,000 and top day of the meeting was get-away day on which the Worlds Fair Handicap was run. 73,246 was handled on that day and Main Man won the big 0,000 event. Jockey Shorty Adams was the leading rider, with twenty-seven winning mounts and apprentice Warren Van Tassel second with twenty-six.
