PREPARE FOR ARCADIA STAKES California Breeders Champion Stakes and New Years Handicap. Eligibles Working Out Over Santa Anita Course Breeders Champion to Be Run on December 31. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 16 Two races loom large in the thoughts of the horsemen these days at Santa Anita Park. They are the 0,000 opening day feature, called the California Breeders Champion Stakes, and the 0,000 New Years Handicap, which will be contested for on the Monday following the opening, Saturday, December 31. The former is a mile test for two-year-olds foaled in California, entries for the race having closed on August 1, 1936. Fifty-four horses still remain eligible, their last payments having been made. Of this group many are now taking daily workouts at the big Arcadia oval and look to be shaping up splendidly. Blue Breeze, the good Blue Larkspur filly owned by the Conejo Ranch, worked a half mile on December 13 in :51. Valley Lass, considered by many to be a top threat, went the full distance of the race in 1:47, hard held all the way. Dunfrese, the Boeing entry, went five-eighths in 1:02, along with Nikta, which turned the distance in 1:03, Last Hand, the good McCarthy and Rowan colt, a son of Tick On, went an easy seven furlongs in 1:32. Reports from the North state that such crack nominees as Smoky Snyder and The Porter colt, Cargador which means Porter in Spanish, are training well for the race. A large number of big-name horses will be ready to go postward on Monday, January 2, in the New Years Handicap. This race should see its finest field in the, history of its running. Horses like Count Arthur, Specify, Gosum, Indian Broom, Ligaroti, Main Man, Bourbon King, Mosawtre, Golden-eye, Preeminent, Flying Scot, Fire Marshal, Whichcee, Piccolo and others, indicate their sharpness by recent works. Trainers are beginning to lengthen them out over a mile and farther in order to have them ready for the mile and one-sixteenth New Years j Handicap. i
