FLAMINGO STAKES CANDIDATES Eight Hialeah Stake Eligibles Among Twenty-Five Leading Juveniles. Volitant, Third Degree, Inscoelda, Benefactor and T. M. Dorsett Among Those Nominated. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 20. That the candidates for the 0,000 added Flamingo Stakes on Saturday, February 25 at Hialeah rate high in thoroughbred quality is best exemplified in the annual experimental handicaps issued by John B. Campbell, Frank J. Bryan and Joe McCarty. In the average ratings compiled by these three handicappers for two-year-olds of 1938, eight Flamingo nominees which advance a year with the arrival of 1939, are listed among the first twenty juveniles. An average of the three ratings places the leading Flamingo entrants at the following poundage: Horse.1 Owner. Av.Wt. Volitant Saratoga Stable. 119 Third Degree Greentree Stable.. 118 Benefactor Col. E. R. Bradley 118 Inscoelda Woolf ord Farm 117 T. M. Dorsett Joe W. Brown 115 Hash Greentree Stable 115 Roll and Toss Greentree Stable 114 Technician Woolf ord Farm 114 Both McCarty and Campbell rated Volitant at 120 pounds while Bryan allotted the son of Display and Flighty Anna 119 pounds. Benefactor which Col. Bradley believes to be of Derby stuff, is given 120 by Campbell and McCarty and 115 by Bryan. Third Degree also is assigned 120 by McCarty but Campbell quotes 118 and Bryan, 116. Racing secretary Charles J. McLennan of Hialeah Park is even more impressed with Continued on fifteenth vage. FLAMINGO STAKES CANDIDATES Continued from first page. Volitant. In his ratings, as compared to 130 pounds he would place on the years champion. El Chico, he believes Volitant worthy of 125 pounds. He would place Benefactor at 122 and Third Degree at 116. All handicappers agree that the champion two-year-old filly of the year is Inscoelda which trainer Ben Jones hopes will duplicate Lawrins feat in the Flamingo Stakes. Inscoelda had class enough to whip Volitant in the thirty-second running of the Walden Stakes at Pimlico. How good Volitant is may be gleaned from the fact that the Geo. H. Bull-John A. Morris colorbearer was the only colt to press El Chico this year, and that was in the Junior Champion Stakes at Aqueduct. In their experimental handicaps, McCarty weighted Inscoelda at 118 while Campbell and Bryan placed an impost of 116 pounds. McLennan lists the daughter of Insco and Griselda at 118. Many of Hialeahs coming three-year-olds will be named for the countrys principal three-year-old classics of 1939, such as the Kentucky Derby, won by last seasons Flamingo winner, Lawrin, the Freakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, Arlington Classic and Washington Parks American Derby. Already named for the Preakness are Hash, Third Degree, Volitant, -Benefactor and T. M. Dor-sett among others which axe, listed for the Flamingo.
