POPE ABANDONS PLANS ROME, Italy, Dec. 20. On the advice of his physicians, Pope Pius XI. reluctantly abandoned his plans to participate personally in the formal inauguration today of a new holy year of prayer and devotion. The pontiff was prevailed upon to renounce his plans by his physicians, who decided that the ceremonies, entailing numerous formalities, would constitute a dangerous strain on his failing energy.
