RANCHQS GIRL BY HEAD Qualifies for Kindergarten Stakes by Close Verdict in Glymont Purse. Outlasts Arden Lass, Noon Step and Nicky in Mondays Juvenile Event at Bowie. BOWIE, Md., April 3. Four candidates for the Bowie Kindergarten, - principal juvenile event decided at the southern Maryland course each spring, had public trials for that stake this afternoon, with Warbern Stables Ranchos Girl proving most capable of the quartet. The group measured strides in the four furlongs Glymont Purse, with the daughter of Cohort Emancipate, which races for the California establishment of Maj. Albert Warner and Joseph Bernhardt, coming from behind the pace to gain a head decision. Closest to her at the finish was the New Orleans campaigner Arden Lass, while the weary pacemaker Noon Step was two lengths farther away. Nicky was a well-beaten fourth, this completing the group of four eligiblcs for next weeks stake. The successful miss was a well-supported second choice at .35 to , with Noon Step ruling a 13-to-10 favorite. Over a dead track she completed the distance in :49, driven out at the end. The score was witnessed by an excellent off-day gathering, perfect weather prevailing for the first time during the meeting. STEVENSON ENERGETIC. Charlie Stevenson, decidedly best of the veteran riders active at Prince Georges Park, rode an energetic race atop Ranchos Girl to make the accounting. The bay filly left the post a trifle slowly and seemed inclined to bear out on the turn. Turning for home she was driven through on the inside of all but the pacemaker to have dead aim at the High Time colt at the furlong post. From that point to the wire she wore him down steadily. Arden Lass, seasoned by a pair of races at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, was a forward factor the entire distance and hung on with good courage under punishment. Noon Step had no excuse. The New Yorker opened up a four lengths lead on his opponents in the first quarter but started to shorten stride once he was in the home stretch. Despite the lash of the whip, he faded fast in the last eighth, giving way to the leading pair. Nicky showed a bit of speed but tired. IMPROVED RIDE. Beacon Rock, conditioned by a race over the track and better handled by Bateman than in his previous outing, drove to a half-length victory over Pete Wendling in the six furlongs dash for three-year-olds, nonwinners of the male "division. A length farther away Key Man outlasted Pharo Warrior for third money. The score marked the Continued on eighteenth page. There was some support for the son of Diavolo and Cairn who was a .85 to chance in the machines. Bateman had Beacon Rock in a forward position all the way, while escaping trouble by taking the overland route. He brought his charge on in the stretch to wear down Key Man and then withstood the bid of Pete Wendling. The runner-up went into contention steadily on the turn and finished with a nice flash of speed. Key Man, making his first start since last November, fought his way out of tight quarters in the back stretch run but Stevenson was forced to take the inner route and the deepest going on the turn. His mount came through to gain a short lead at the top of the stretch and hung on well under extreme pressure. Pharo Warrior is improving. Affair, best fancied of the dozen starters, broke slowly and was pinched back in the first furlong. He went up fast on the outside making the turn and then hung in the last three-sixteenths; Mystery Miss, a beaten favorite in her 1939 debut over this course last week, had little trouble taking the measure of Maryland-bred three-year-olds in the five and a half furlongs claimer, which was third on the card. There, the daughter of Trojan Mystify, which races for Chester F. Hockley, performed like a proper 3 to 5 chance by leading from end to end to register by four lengths with speed to spare. The battle for the place was more stirring than that for major honors, with Saving Grace gaining this prize by a length over the swiftly closing Charles F. Brooke Herod, favored by the breaks in racing luck, managed to stagger home a head in advance of Happy Road in the mile and a sixteenth fourth race, a cheap claiming affair. Another length back, Turkish Brand saved third money by a length and a half from Clever Girl, the major unfortunate of the race. When Chancing stumbled and went down at the first turn, Stevenson pulled around that plater and his mount kept right on going out, losing many lengths. This cost her the race. Oros completed a riding double with the grey son of Dear Herod Ann Brooke, which races for M. B. Goss.
