BLUE GRASS STAKES KEENELAND PRE-DERBY TRIAL ffl x Probable Field of Ten Likely for ,000 Spring Feature Benefactor and Other Prominent Kentucky Derby Candidates May Be Seen Under Colors in This Popular Fixture Training Well Under Way LEXINGTON, Ky., April 3. A probable field of at least ten three-year-olds, possibly more, for the ,000 added Blue Grass Stakes at Keenelands spring race meeting was indicated today by a survey of the twenty-one eligibles to this feature race at the Lexington track. The Blue Grass Stakes will be the most important pre-Derby race run in Kentucky this spring and practically all the eligibles are also among the Derby nominees. Greentree Farm, Calumet Farm and Col. JE. R. Bradley all may start two horses each in the mile and one-eighth test at Keeneland. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable has four eligibles, but trainer John Gaver already has announced that One by One will race in the East. The others are Roll and Toss, Hash and Third Degree. From this trio trainer Gaver probably will pick two for the Keeneland race. Roll and Toss, a very promising colt at two last year, has been training well in Florida, and trainer Gaver stated the colt by Questionnaire will make his first start at Keeneland on opening day Thursday, April 13. Third Degree was a good colt last season, placed in a number of stakes and is regarded as a likely running mate for Roll and Toss at Keeneland. Calumet Farm won the Blue Grass Stakes last year with Bull Lea. Trainer Frank Kearns is pointing Easy Mon and Temulac to carry the colors of Warren Wright in the JL939 running. A number of horsemen are very high on Temulac. J. H. WHITNEY PAIR. Counterpoise and Heather Broom are eligible to carry the colors of John H. Whitney in the Keeneland race. However, one will definitely race in the East and the other will start in the Blue Grass Stakes. Satisfactory progress is reported for Colonel Bradleys Benefactor and Balmy Spring at the Bradley farm here, and that pair is expected to be coupled as the Bradley entry. Trainer Cliff Porter definitely announced today that C. H. Clearys Calexico is "absolutely a starter in the Blue Grass Stakes." King Ranchs Equestrian is now training splendidly at Columbia, S. C, and owner Robert Kleberg intends to send the son of Equipoise to the post for the Blue Grass Stakes if he is ready. Other starters in the Keeneland race are expected to come from the racing stables of H. P. Headley, Valdina Farms, Reidinger Brothers and Valley Grey Farm.
