T.... ............. .......... . t Here and There on the Turf Ariel Toy Superior Will Get Test at Jamaica Bowie Enthusiasm Stands Up Tropical Stake Holds Interest Ariel Toy left no doubt as to his superiority among the starters in the Arkansas Derby, moving into a good lead when ready and holding it, but his performance did not leave the impression that he should be regarded as a dangerous candidate for ensuing three-year-old honors. The rather small son of Ariel and Toyo, by Waygood, did all that he was supposed to do, however, in winning the ,000 Hot Springs feature and that means hes still in the running for further honors. As for his opponents in the mile and one furlong event, all may be expected to run into difficulties before they capture a stake this season. Ariel Toy was offered "so-so" opposition and he made no mistakes with. it. much to the gratification of the talent who had established him a short-priced favorite. Hugh W. Jackson, who found racing much more exciting than the stock market and became his own trainer last summer, is taking Ariel Toy to New York where he will have a fine chance of demonstrating his ability against the better three-year-olds as well as over a distance. The colt is eligible to the Wood Memorial Stakes, the 0,000 attraction of the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs spring meeting, and he should be in fine condition for it. After his trip from Hot Springs to Long Island he will require just a few trials to keep on edge pending the Wood running on April 29, although he may be called upon for a preliminary effort. However,- he has the- foundation of training under him and should have no excuses in the Wood, the race that should determine his Kentucky Derby chances as well as some of the better-known candidates. Bowie unfortunately has had bad weather for the early portion of its meeting but nevertheless the sport was well received and all seems well on the Maryland front. With the track in muddy condition for the ,000 added Bowie Handicap, Hypocrite displayed far better form than he did at Santa Anita to finish the mile and seventy yards event in front. He was one of four members of the field of six which had campaigned during the winter and the seasoning came in handy against Challephen, which had been rested since last fall. The William L. Brann vet eran appeared to be an easy winner turning into the stretch, but he apparently was not quite tightened up and collapsed in the final sixteenth where Hypocrite ran him down. Challephen will improve off that race and it may be a long time off when Hypocrite again beats him. Hypocrite is the last son of Wrack in racing, and even though he isnt a first-class colt he is at least keeping the stallions name alive among those persons who only remember the sire and dam. Bred by Ral Parr and sporting that Marylanders famous silks, Hypocrite won the Survivor Stakes at Pimlico last fall, but his best effort may have been in the Maryland Handicap, in which he was second to Jacola while defeating several other likely three-year-olds. Conditions in California just werent suitable to Hypocrite, as is the case with numerous other horses shipped there from the East and Middle West, and the Parr colt required little more than his arrival back home in Maryland to be ready for a winning effort. He may have more ability than he displayed in his Bowie Handicap victory, and that would mean trouble in races like the Philadelphia and Dixie Handicaps. Tropical Park is in the final week, with every indication that the meeting will end as one of the most successful in the history of the track. Patronage is falling off steadily, as is to be expected, with the Maryland season open and the northern weather moderating to lure home the tourists, but all who are left, as well as a good share of the native populace, will turn out. Saturday for the Tropical Handicap, the richest race of the track. The Gables Racing Association is offering a 0,000 purse to this feature and the award serves a dual purpose to hold the good horses in Florida and to maintain interest to the end. The Tropical Handicap isnt drawing the sort of horses usually found in a race of this value on the regular circuit, but the probable field includes several very shifty performers and compares favorably with the group contesting the inaugural a year ago, -when Tatterdemalionwas- victor over Gyral, Infantry and others:
