EL CHICOS BRILLIANT WORK Ziegler Eligible Works Derby Route in 2 :09 at Jamaica. Early Pace Exceedingly Fast, With Jockey Wall Hustling Colt Regains Many Admirers by Move. JAMAICA, N. Y., April 25. William Ziegler, Jr.s, El Chico gave convincing evidence of being much more than a sprinter in a trial for the Wood Memorial at the Jamaica course today. Matt Brady brought out the son of John P. Grier La Chica shortly before 11 oclock and with Nick Wall, his regular jockey, in the saddle, he went along for a mile and a furlong in 1:52 to gallop out the fulj. mile and a quarter in 2:09. It was one of the most impressive moves of any Kentucky Derby candidate and restores the Ziegler colt to good standing after his defeat by Gilded Knight the opening day of the New York season. There always had been a doubt expressed of the staying quality of the Ziegler colt, but this move just about settled that question. The early pace was exceedingly fast in the move when with a first furlong in :12, he went to the quarter post in :24, three fur longs in :37, half in :49, five furlongs in 1:00, and the six furlongs in 1:12. The mile was run in 1:39. Thus it will be seen that by furlongs it shows :12, :12, :12, and :12, up to the six furlongs. The next quarter was run in :26 to reach the mile in 1:39 and the final furlong was run in :13 to finish out the nine furlongs in 1:52. The colt was being hustled along by Wall at the end, as was to be expected with such a fast move. Brady was naturally well pleased with the showing of the colt in this final for the Wood, which is a gallop of a mile and seventy yards. It was a trial to suggest entire fitness and with some breezing exercises before the running, a good race is assured. T. M. DORSETTS FAST MILE. While El Chico was having his final at Jamaica, Joe W. Brown brought out T. M. Dorsett at Aqueduct and his task was a mile in 1:40, accomplished in breezing fashion. This fellow showed his fitness when he was winner of the Stuyvesant Handicap Saturday. He ran a smart six furlongs on that occasion and this mile in 1:40 would indicate a readiness for the Wood. His fractions were :48 for the first half, 1:14 for the six furlongs and 1:40 for the distance. While El Chico and T. M. Dorsett both im pressed with their trials for the Wood, three other of the prominent eligibles were raced during the afternoon. These were William Woodwards Paumonok winner, Johnstown; j George D. Wideners Eight Thirty, which was making his first appearance of the season, and Mrs. F. Ambiose Clarks Lovely Night. Besides the five that have been named, others that are expected to make up the Wood Memorial field are the Wheatley Stables Gilded Knight, winner of the Chesa-peake, and a stablemate to Johnstown; John Hay Whitneys Heather Broom, Alfred G. Vanderbilts Impound, King Ranchs Equestrian; Parker Comings Chip In; Vera S. Braggs Bostwar, and possibly the Greentree Stables One by One, and E. W. Duffys Chief Onaway. Jimmy "Schnozzle" Durante purchased the plater Westbrooke from Miss M. Lynch and John Coburn will continue to train the horse
