THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 ! GILDED KNIGHT By NORRIS ROYDEN v An example of how a thoroughbred can improve from his two to his three-year-old form is the showing of Gilded Knight this spring. The son of Sir Gallahad HI. and Gold Brick, by Broomstick, began to get better last fall when his engagements were stretched out, but he really has come out this spring as an outstanding contender for three-year-old honors, as shown by his victoribus performance in the Chesapeake Stakes after handing El Chico his first defeat a week previously. Gilded Knight was late coming around, as is more usual than not with the get of Sir Gallahad HI. During the summer and early fall, the Wheatley Stable colt was . unable to make much headway, although having gotten out of the maiden ranks. James I Fitzsimmons, developer of many other horses, knew he had a promising youngster, however, and gave the colt as many opportunities as possible during the late stages of the season. After he had finished fourth to Xalapa Clown in the Ardsley Handicap at a mile and seventy yards, losing by about four and one-half lengths, Gilded Knight was shipped to Narragansett Park, where he was steadily finishing third in the New England Futurity over the same distance, and the track in heavy condition. He finished in determined fashion to be slightly more than two lengths back of Challedon and strongly lapped on Impound, the two colts finishing just back of him in the Chesapeake. In another outing at the Rhode Island course, Gilded Knight won the Wannamoisett Handicap by four lengths over Heather Time, drawing away easily at the end. A week later he tried for the Pimlico Futurity and again came through with a creditable effort in landing third honors back of Challedon and Thiid Degree as Impound went unplaced. After wintering well, Gilded Knight at the first asking came from behind to nose out El Chico in a six furlongs dash, and off of that effort had the conditioning to hold Impound and Challedon safe in the Chesapeake at a mile and one-sixteenth after coming from behind to wrest the lead away from Porters Mite and Ariel Toy. He was given weight by Challedon and Impound in the Havre de Grace Stakes, but the Sir Gallahad colt left no doubt he was the best as the race was run. Not eligible for the Derby, Gilded Knight is aiming for the Preakness, and if he continues as he has started out he may be able to take up 126 pounds and hold his own. Gilded Knight is from one of Americas oldest and best families, his fifth dam being Maggie B. B., this being the line of Whisk Broom H. and numerous other good horses. If he turns out to be a good colt, Gilded Knight has the breeding to back it up. f Flying Fox I Ormc Ajax ....
