Foals by International Turf Heroes Sires Scored Derby Victories In America, England, France North Wales Youngsters 4 In Virginia by Johnstown, Pont LEveque and Pearlweed WARRENTON, Va., May 2.— Youngsters sired by winners of the Kentucky, Epsom and French Derbys, lend a cosmopolitan touch to this years foaling season at Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.s North Wales Stud, near here. The foals possessed of illustrious parentage are a chestnut filly from Lampshade, sired by Johnstown, winner of the 1939 Kentucky Derby; a gray filly, from Lily of the Valley, sired by Pont LEveque, hero of the 1940 Epsom Derby, and a bay filly, from Flowerpiece, sired by Pearlweed, who accounted for the 1935 renewal of the French Derby. Johnstown was a ranking two-year-old and leading three-year-old of his year. In his triumphant Derby essay, the son of Jamestown and the Sir Gallahad III. mare, La France, displayed his vaunted speed. He took the lead quickly and flashed past the finish with eight lengths to spare over Challedon. Johnstowns first get are now yearlings. Pont LEveque is a story in himself. Before his victory in the English classic the three-year-old of 1940 had not given any substantial reason to indicate he was capable of turning the trick. He won rather easily. He was bred by H. Morris, who had purchased, his dam, Ponteba, while carrying him. Foaled at Newmarket Early in May, 1937, at Banstead Manor Stud, outside Newmarket, Pont LEveque was fcaled. His sire, Barneveldt, was a top-notch performer. Among his victories was a score in the 1931 running of the Grand Prix de Paris, his most noteworthy triumph. Ponteba, as well as Barneveldt, was bred by M. Henri Corbiere at his Haras Nonant le Pin, in the French province of Normandy, not far from where Frank Jay Gould maintained his nursery, Robilliard. A daughter of the French Derby winner, Belfonds, Ponteba had one foal before Pont LEveque. In 1939 she missed to the cover of Bahram, who is now at this nursery, and in 1940 she foaled a filly by Mahmoud, another Epsom Derby winner. Pearlweed won his classic spurs in the 1935 renewal of the French Derby. He is a member of the celebrated Pearl family. His dam, Pearl Maiden, was a noted producer. Among her other foals are Pearl Opal, stake winner and dam of the Cesare-witch winner, Hunters Moon IV.: By Pearl, a good stake winner in France, and Pearl - Cap. The latter was undoubtedly the best three-year-old filly of 1931, accounting for the French Oaks and other principal fixtures that season.
