Overdrawn Takes Jamaica Handicap Leads Augury Home by Neck After Setting All of Pace — Marriage Annexes Alcedo NEW YORK, N. Y., May :.— George D. Wideners Overdrawn, repeating his victory of last rear, was winner of the Jamaica Handicap over the best sprinters at the Long Island course of the Metropolitan Jockey Club today. The son of Jack High added ,150 to his earnings when he led Neil McCarthys good mare Augury home, and Mrs. Anthony Pelleteris Bull Reigh just beat Birch Rod, a companion of the winner for third. The victoi . of the Widener silks was particularly popular with a crowd of 31,315 enthusiasts who in the previous race cheered home the two-year-old Red Sonnet that had also carried *he silks of the Philadelphia sportsman. Eleven paraded to the post for the sprint of the Jamaica Handicap, and Ovedrawn. leaving from the inside stall, was off on his toes. Speed to Spare was right with him and Bull Reigh left in motion, while Birch Rod was caught napping and walked out of her stall. Through the back stretch Speed to Spare hung closely to Overdrawn, but the Widener speedster had the inside berth and he had a neck advantage as Coule kept a nice hold of his head, content to outfoot the Miles speed artist. Augury was well outside of these, but she had soon moved into third place and she was going strongly as the field rounded from the back stretch. Dispose Bears Out Badly At the three-furlong mark, Tommy May moved with Dispose and he closed up steadily on the outside until, as the stretch turn was reached, he bore out badly to lose many lengths and be eliminated. Overdrawn was holding his lead steadily as Augury drew up to take care of Speed to Spare. Then Bull Reigh made his move, but still Overdrawn fought along, after taking care of the relays. At the end Augury was well lapped on the Widener gelding to only lose by a neck, and two lengths away Bull Reigh had saved third. Birch Rod, after his sluggish start, had closed a big gap to land in fourth place. George D. Wideners swift-running juvenile, Red Sonnet, who set a track mark of :58 for the five furlongs in his previous appearance at the meeting, came right back in the Saxon Purse to win again by a matter of three and a half lengths when racing over the same distance in :5835. Hoosier Wolf, closing with determination, out-gamed Bullpen in a lively battle for the place. R. A. Cowards Marriage was a surprise winner of the Alcedo Handicap, a gallop of a mile and a furlong that engaged a field of five. Eased back from the early pace after stepping along with Sir Jeffrey for a quarter, he came again in the stretch to run down the Mayer campaigner and was going away by two lengths. Sir Jeffrey had no trouble beating The Rhymer for the place.
