Jamaica Features Youthful, Grey Lag [Latter Headlines Closing Program Top Handicap Horses Likely To Race in Saturday Event — Juvenile Test on Wednesday NEW YORK, N. Y., May 2.— The Youthful Stakes and the Grey Lag Handicap round out the stake offerings for the final week of the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs spring meeting. The Youthful is for juveniles at five furlongs and will be contested on Wednesday. The final Saturday feature is for three-year-olds and over. The scene will then shift to the Nassau County course of the Westchester Racing Association, where that organization will be hosts for 24 racing days to June 6. The one big fly in the ointment at Jamaica is the running of the Dixie at Pim-lico on Wednesday and this race may detract some attention from the 5,000 added Grey Lag Handicap at a mile and a furlong. This event, which closed with a total of 43 nominations, should by all standards attract a field of merit. The nomination list includes the best of the handicap performers now in training, and of the name horses the only absentee is War Relic. Handicapper Jack Campbell has been studying his weight assignments for this race and on Monday he will have them ready. His top weight is a matter of conjecture, but is inclined to put in Challedon and Mioland on an even footing. They base their figures on the finish of the Philadelphia Handicap, in which the two finished a matter of inches apart, with the Brann starter getting the award. Market Wise for Grey Lag Market Wise, the Louis Tufano-owned colt, is certain to be among the top weights. This fellow has shown a dec ided improvement in his recent training trials and a five-furlong test at a fast clip reveals that he has not lost any of his foot. How many of the candidates for the Grey Lag will be shipped to Maryland for the Dixie is unknown. Trainer Max Hirsch, who is grooming Attention for the weekend special, indicated that he would decide over the week-end as to his plans. Mioland, Challedon, Whirlaway, Fairymant and Staretor are at present in Maryland awaiting the Dixie. Plans for those horses in regards to the Grey Lag will be held in abeyance until after the running of that fixture. The Brann pair, Challedon and Pictor, will likely be shipped here, while the status of Whirlaway is in doubt. However, Campbell pointed out that the race would attract a field of ten or more and he predicted that the winner would know he had been to the races. The Youthful Stakes, one of the time-honored fixtures of this meeting, is endowed with a ,000 added purse. As expected, the event on the closing date in March attracted a large number of nominees, 115. Campbell would make no predictions as to the probable size of this field.
