Espino Gold Home First In Inaugural at Beulah Comes Within Fifth of Second Of Mile Track Standard COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 2. — Closing with a well-timed rush on the outside through the stretch, Mrs. Frank Nugents Espino Gold registered a handy victory over Jim Pat and Fergies Count in the Inaugural Handicap, sixth and featured event of the initial days racing at Beulah Park this afternoon. Red Idol finished fourth, with Gallee, the early leader, badly beaten off. When the break came, Gallee was hustled into the lead and closely pressed by Fergies Count, this pair contested the leadership to the far turn. At this point, Fergies Count forged to the front and led into the stretch. Gallee gave up as Jim Pat and Espino Gold challenged. During the final test, Espino Gold had most in reserve and drew clear nearing the end. Jim Pat as easily outlasted the tiring Fergies Count, which ruled favorite. The mile was completed in l:374s, within a fifth of a second of the track record. Jockey L. Whiting had the mount on Espino Gold, which marked his third success of the afternoon. At the conclusion of this event, Robert J. Dienst, general manager, presented the Beulah Park Jockey Club trophy to Mrs Frank Nugent, owner of Espino Gold. In addition, the race was worth 25 to the winner. An excellent crowd witnessed the sport.
