L, N. Y., May 21. Royal Archer earned the distinction of being a stakes winner "through the field" in what was only the second start of his expanding young career, when he distanced the field in the Belmont Spring Maiden Steeplechase, which was the stellar attraction on Thursdays matinee of the thoroughbred sport at the Westchester Racing Association Park. Mrs; F. Ambrose Clarks Royal Minstrel gelding, one of the outsiders in a group of ten of the more promising young hedge talent, cantered past the finish in this "about two miles" a mere twenty lengths in front of Brooks Parkers Cortesano, who was the runner-up. Richard K. Mellons St. Patricks Day finished in third place, another two lengths back, and Miss Ella Wideners Iron Shot was fourth. Only six finished the trying, course in a contest that developed a colorful spectacle and produced numerous thrills. None of the fallen horses and their riders were injured. Dedham eliminated himself when losing Magee at the third fence. The favored OKelly came a cropper with Pen-rod over the Liverpool. Knights Quest fell with Roby at the sixth hedge while racing head-and-head with the winner, and Merchantman spilled over the eighth with King. Straggling Start in Steeplechase The successful Royal Archer got at least four lengths the best of a straggling start, an advantage he didnt need, and after the first mile it was merely a question of his scaling the remaining hedges. He paid a small following 7.80 and earned ,200, going over the course in 3:50. Theightest crowd of the meeting turned out to see the chase feature and its supporting flat events, one counting 12,509 at the turnstiles. The same afternoon last spring found 14,433 present. Favorite players found several occasions on which to cheer, particularly when Cuantos and Little Diana ran according to their forecasts. Royal Archer left not the remotest doubt of his superiority after OKelly eliminated himself at the treacherous Liverpool and Knights Quest came a cropper a fence farther along the course, while going easily alongside Royal Archer. When Knights. Quest fell, Royal Archer was left 15 lengths in front. McMillan had only to steady him across the remaining hedges. He bobbled at the last one, but stayed perpendicular and was "home free." Cortesano loafed along intent on clearing fences to the last half mile, where he made up a little ground on those behind Continued on Page Thirty-Six Royal Archer Easy Winner in Chase Takes Spring Maiden Event At Belmont Park Cuantos Best in Discount Purse Continued from Page One the winner to beat St. Patricks Day out of second money. Iron Shot fenced as well as any of the field and may have been a factor, only for being bothered by a prone horse midway of the race. William E. Boeings Cuantos scored a front-running victory in the Discount Purse, feature flat event on the days program, when he came to the final marker two lengths clear of Calumet Farms Daddy Fox. A similar margin separated the runner-up and Don Juan II., Binglin Stock Farms representative. Cuantos broke on top, was steadied along by Neves and simply went about his task without further ado. Beautiful H. pegged the pace of the winner but gave way after reaching the stretch when Dandy Fox made his challerige. The latter had little trouble taking his portion of the prize money, but he wasnt good enough to menace the winner. Cuantos, an odds-on choice, ran the six furlongs in 1:11. Uncle Henry McDaniel, who has spent most of a useful lifetime winning races for other sportsmen, sent out the winner under his own silks in the opening five-furlong dash, whenhe saddled Meneither, a son of Menow and Neitherone. Winner Carries All of the Pace Well-ridden by Alfred Robertson, the McDaniel juvenile carried all the pace, to hold the favorite, Regal Boy, safe at all stages and lead him over the line by more than two lengths. Jotun, who had raced third to the first two all the way, saved third from Carbonate and the others cut no figure in the running. The judges scrutinized the testimony of the camera for many minutes before confirming Ben Whitakers Highborough as the victor over Brother Dear in a stretch-long duel climaxing the six furlongs of the second event. Johnny Gilbert was on the winner, who gave the runner-up 15 pounds and hung up 1:12. Solar Star gained a few lengths the last quarter for third in this field of mediocre sprinters. The winner paid 1.50. Milky Way Farm won its first purse of the meeting when apprentice Hildebrant put Stepsome, the public choice, on the Bill Daly early in the mile and a sixteenth of the third and then managed to keep him going barely long enough to beat out Mrs. D. N. Frosts Deviltry by a length and a quarter, while Raisin Bread finished a bang-up third. Raisin Bread Unfortunate Only for ducking in under the whip at the 16th pole, losing ground as Coule straightened him, Raisin Bread might have scored. The race was teletimed in 1 :44 and the winner paid .10. Little Diana, who races for Mrs. John Hertz, was installed a strong choice in a field of 10 maiden two-year-old fillies going five furlongs over the Widener Straight Course in the fourth and ran right to her support when bouncing home winner by three lengths in :59 "flat." Whirligig was the chaser all the way, beating out First Blush a length for the place. First Blush figures to improve. Little Diana paid .90 and was ridden by Longden. The mornings rain seemed to have settled the dust and made the track a bit faster. Circle Ms Sir War raced his way out of the Withers when trailing in the King Eric Handicap, a mile and a sixteenth test for class "C" three-year-olds, that found Louis Lee Haggin, n.s favored Air Current winning by a neck from the pacemaking Eire, as Venturous finished third. Venturous may have been best, being forced back and pocketed on the far lane and then coming to the outside in the stretch to finish fastest of all. Air Current, ridden by Eads, won by less margin than the ground he saved over Eire, cutting the last corner. Air Current paid .90. The race was run in 1:43.
