Crete Handicap Has Many Possibilities Expect More Than Twelve Will Start Pig Tails, Defense, Certie, Radio Crusade Should Give Older Rivals Stiff Battle CRETE, 111., May 21. A field of at least twelve contestants this morning seemed assured for Saturdays running of the Crete Handicap, ,000 added six-furlong feature of the week-end program at Lincoln Fields. Thirty-one are eligible for the sprint and nearly half of them have shown enough recently in private trials or in actual competition to indicate they would have a chance in the first added money attraction on the local tracks spring program. The possibility of the race developing a many-sided tilt between three-year-olds continues to arouse interest, and whether any of them is able to win their private battle will be watched with keen attention. Horses of this age, among the many eli-gibles training on the grounds, include Pig Tails, Herbert M. Woolfs winner of the feature sprint on last Mondays opening day program; Zig Zag, First of All, Tomo-chichi, Defense, Radio Crusade, Radio Joe, Certie and Ruby Isles. Besides Fig Tails, the Woolf establishment has two other capable Crete Handicap nominees in Signator and Technician, both of whom loom as distinct threats. Invader From Pacific Coast Another interesting candidate for honors in the Crete is Norman W. Churchs Defense, who was rated among the best two-year-olds on the Pacific Coast last year. Defense is scheduled to make his first start of the year in the Crete, and where he fits in the local handicap division may be determined to considerable extent by his showing this week-end. Two other likely California candidates are the R. C. Stables Radio Crusade and Clyde Van Dusens Certie, both of whom raced successfully in the far West. Additional Crete Handicap hopefands more familiar to Chicago racing fans are the Arcturus Stables Smacked, who with 116 pounds may be top weight in the race; Mrs. G. H. Emicks Book Plate, and Last Call; Mrs. A. K. Weasts Equistar, Mrs, G. B. Scaflbns Crossbow n., John Marschs Bulldinger and W. D. Covingtons Zig Zag. While the success of the Crete Handicap already is assured, Lincoln Fields officials today were giving attention to the other features of Saturdays card. One of these supporting events in the Drake Hotel Handicap, which is destined to bring out scm3 of the better distance runners quartered here. The Drake will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth. Another contest which premises to bring out a sparkling field is the Woodlawn Purse, which may appeal to many of the leading two-year-olds. This number will be decided at five furlongs.
