First Race Over New Turf Course at Detroit Today Eight Named to Contest Event-Columbus Day in Feature Tilt DETROIT, Mich., May 23. Fifteen horses were named overnight to compete in the Grosse Pointe Farms Handicap, six-furlong feature for Mondays program at the Detroit Fair Grounds. Top weight of 116 pounds for the three-year-old sprint was assigned to Harry C. Richards Columbus Day, a recent winner in Maryland. Others scheduled to go postward for the headliner are Gold Princess, Uncle Jock, Golden Goose, Sam Houston, Cant Lose, More Roman, Dark Lad, Flash Town, By Conscript, Bebeja, Try Fin, Unbuttoned, Patriot and La Zonga. The first race to be decided on the new Lewis turf course drew the entry of eight of the better platers quartered here to contest at the "about" seven-furlong distance. The offering will be the fourth event on the card. Seven entrants were excluded, as track officials will limit the Lewis course fields to eight horses. Racing secretary Charles Henry has arranged six good supporting events, and post time for the Monday sport will be at the twilight hour, 4:45 p. m. Eastern War Time.
