Narragansett to Offer ,200 Minimum Purses Highest Figure for Overnight Races in New England History PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 23. Narragan-sett Park will establish a purse minimum of ,200 when it opens its second 1942 meeting on August 10, president James E. Dooley announced today. The new purse minimum for the forty-two-day meeting is the highest ever known in the history of New England racing. The minimum at the spring meeting this year was ,000. At last years summer meeting minimum purses were ,100. The ,200 purses compare favorably with the prizes offered at the countrys largest and most successful race tracks. After its first week of operation back in 1934, Narragansett set a minimum purse scale of ,000, which, at the time, equalled the top offering of any track in America. Two years ago Narragansett raised the purses at its summer meetings to an ,100 minimum, the highest in New England. . Still another boost indicates at this time the faith of Narragansetts board of directors in the future of American racing in general and New England racing in particular. Despite gas rationing and other war-time problems, Narragansett will continue its endeavors to procure the highest type of sport possible, to offer prizes that will assure the best stables for this section and to share this seasons revenue with horsemen. In addition to the new high purse level, Narragansett has scheduled fifteen stakes for its next meeting which total 5,000 in Value.
