Begin Issuing Licenses At Thistle Down Oval Allshouse, Gallagher Pleased With Caliber of Applicants CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 27. Stewards James F. Gallagher and Harry Allshouse of the Thistle Down Racing Association were busily engaged here today granting licenses to the many turfmen and jockeys on hand for the 31-day meeting which will have its inaugural here Saturday, May 30. The Forest City Jockey Club officials expressed satisfaction with the class of the riders and thoroughbreds .here for the impending meeting and both predicted that the 1942 local season will be a banner one. L. Henderson Van Zandt, assistant to racing secretary Charles F. Henry, arrived yesterday and he is checking over the stable lists to determine the caliber of sport to be presented here Saturday. Van Zandt will announce the weights for the Thistle Down Inaugural and Cleveland Hotel Handicaps late today and both of these features are expected to draw stellar fields. Supporting attractions on the initial days program are well balanced and high-class racing should result.. Clay Puett, who will serve as starter for the meeting, announced that a great many, horses have schooled from the device which Puett, himself, invented and constructed. The educational sessions have been lively and many racing devotees have been on hand daily at the mile and a quarter chute to witness the morning trials. Another member of the official family on hand is Frank Otis, who will do double duty as a placing judge and clerk of scales. Otis has been identified with the thoroughbred sport, for many years, first as a rider, later as a trainer and, finally, in his present role. Otis will be remembered by veterans as the jockey who so successfully handled the thoroughbreds of the late Barney Schreiber. In the meantime, at Thistle Down stall space is becoming increasingly hard to find and track Superintendent J. Oliver Brown is having difficulty allotting accommodations to several late comers. He stated that all barns will be filled to capacity before the sport gets under way here Saturday. General manager Strong announced that post time for the Saturday and holiday cards will be at 2:15 p. m. Eastern War Time, while the initial event on all other, days will be called out at the twilight hour, 4:45 p. m.
