Alsab Works Out Smartly In Defense of New Crown Sent Nine Furlongs in 1:51 As Prep for Belmont Stakes ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 27. Mrs. Al Sabaths sensational Alsab, who will defend his newly won three-year-old crown against Greentrees Shut Out in the forthcoming Belmont Stakes on Army and Navy day at Belmont Park, put in a smart trial for that engagement at the Nassau County course today. With trainer August "Sarge" Swenke and Pony McAtee timing the move, Good Goods 00 son sped along in :23, :36, :48, 1:00, 1:12, 1:24. 1:38 and a mile and a furlong in 1:51. He pulled up a mile and a quarter in 2:06. Shut Out elbowed his way into the Belmont Stakes picture at the Westchester Racing Associations fashionable park Tuesday afternoon, when he gave weight and1 a very decisive beating to such as Challedon, Third Degree and Reading H. in the mile and a furlong of the Ballot Hanlicap. His final time was 1:48, a mere two-fifths of a second below tv track mark, and he worked out to a mire and a quarter in 2:02. The Equipoise colts excellent showing gives the Belmont Stakes renewal considerably more "box-office" than it held previous to his public prep. Wheeras it had appeared to racegoers a virtual walkover for Alsab, it now shapes up as a struggle of tremendous appeal between the heroes of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. The Belmont is the final one of the cluster of three spring specials comprising the "Triple Crown." The renewed interest in the mile and a half event a week from Saturday indicates a larger field for Army and Navy Day relief societies and the U. S. O. beneficiaries of that patriotic card in which the net receipts will be turned over to those agencies and matched" Ly the Metropolitan Jockey Club from its coffers.
