Seventy-Two Left In Arlington Lassie Juvenile Fillies Will Clash In Arlington Race July 11 From Forty-Two Interests Seventy-two sleek young debutantes of the turf world have passed the final appraisal of their owners to remain eligible for the 0,000 added Arlington Lassie Stakes, it was announced by officials of the North Side track. The 72 young misses represent 42 different interests in this important fixture for two-year-old fillies. With starters yet to pay 00 each, the Lassie Stakes now amounts to 2,600. Owners with the largest number of eligi-bles, four each, are Hal Price Headley of Kentucky, whose Apogee won the 1936 running of the Lassie, and Louis B. Mayer, Hollywood motion picture magnate. Next in number of eligibles, with three each, are Circle M Farm, Coldstream, Charles S. Howard and John Marsch. The latter Chicagoans Blue Delight won the 1940 running. Incidentally, one of Mr. Marschs trio is Morning Lark, full sister to Blue Delight, Lightspur and Blue Flyer, all of whom raceo in the Marsch colors. Two owners have won the Lassie twice. They are the cousins, C. V. Whitney and Alfred Vanderbilt, and each has" two candidates again this year. Mr. Whitneys Lassie winners were the sensational Top Flight, the worlds leading money-winning race mare, who won the Arlington fixture in 1931, and Motto, 1934 winner. One of Mr. Whitneys pair this year is Legend Bearer, a daughter of The Porter and Motto. Mr. Vanderbilt is represented by Ho Hum and Anthem. His previous winners of the stake were Now What in 1939 and Petrify in 1941. Owners With Two Eligibles Other owners with two candidates each include Blenheim Farm, W. E. Boeing. E. R. Bradley, Walter P. Chrysler, A. C. Ernst, Falaise Stable, King Ranch, R. W. Mcll-vain, Crispin Oglebay and J. E. Widener. Additional owners with Lassie candidates, one each, include the following: John A. Bell, Jr., J. C. Braswell, Calumet Farm, J. N. Camden, Christiana Stable, Norman W. Church, R. Sterling Clark, ; Horace N. Davis,. Dixiana, P. L. Fuller, Greentree, Stuart Hamblen, Mrs. R. H. , Heighe, H. C. Herendeen, J. O. Keene, Wil- ; liam Le Baron, Breckinridge Long, Jake Lowenstein, Manhasset Stable, Milky Way Farm, Gustave Ring, Mrs. Albert Sabath, J. C. and S. H. Stone, Jay D. Weil, Mrs. E. duPont Weir, John Hay Whitney, Wood-vale Farm, Woolford Farm. In this latter group are four who have furnished previous winners of the Lassie: Dixiana, Mata Hari, in 1933; Milky Way, Forever Yours in 1935; Calumet, Theen in 1937; Woolford Farm, Inscoelda in 1938. The Lassie will be run for the 14th time on Saturday, July 11. Its co-feature that day will be the Green Velvet Handicap, ,000 added, one and three-sixteenths miles, one of Arlington Parks new stakes on the grass course.
