Mich., June 16.— In one of the closest finishes of the current Detroit Fair Grounds meeting, Mrs. Raymond Grundys Meritorious was up in the closing strides of the first race today to earn a nose verdict. Second honors in the mile and a sixteenth test, which engaged 10 sturdy routers, fell to E. A. Bischoffs Magnetism, who bested J. H. Frazers Dust Cap by a nose. Fourth honors went to B. M. Smiths Venci, while the favored Lady Tongs, representative of Mrs. Earl H. Beezley, finished a soundly beat- tenth. In capturing his second purse here in as many starts, Meritorious, a five-year-old gelded son of Bostonian and Thanks, raced the distance over the good track in 1:49. Lightly regarded in the wagering by the crowd of 10,000 on hand for the sport, the Grundy colorbearer rewarded his scattered backers with a straight "tote" payoff of 2.80. Milligan on Winner Jockey Pat Milligan, who handled Meritorious, had his mount well placed from the start and kept his charge well in hand un- til reaching the final turn. Milligan then sent the victor to the extreme outside for the drive, while Dust Cap and Magnetism, who had cut out the early running, joined In a stirring stretch duel. The leading trio then came down to the wire closely lapped. Dust Cap taking a brief lead near the eighth pole, while Meritorious fought it out gamely to the finish, as did Dust Cap. So closely aligned were the three horses that it was necessary to call for a picture in deciding the result, Meritorious gaining major honors by a short margin over his persistent rivals. Seven ordinary platers met in the second race, decided at six furlongs, and it resulted in a half-length decision for Mrs. E. Harts Piplad, who had the saddle services of jockey Paul Keiper. Mrs. Edward McCuans Stell, favored for the sprint, ran second, a length before Walter Wilkersons Lady Romery, third at the finishing line. Piplad broke fifth, but Keiper hustled the Hart gelding right along during the run down the back stretch and had his * Continued on Page Thirty-Two Meritorious Gets Up In Time for Victory Noses Out Magnetism to Take Opening Race at Detroit Oval Continued from Page One mount within two lengths of Lady Romery passing the first quarter pole. Approaching the stretch, the winner moved up resolutely and, after taking command when settled for the drive, held on determinedly under punishment, withstanding Stell, who closed well.
