Salvino; bred by William Ziegler, Jr. WENT TO POST-5.10. OFF AT 5:11 CENTRAL DAYLIGHT TIME. Start good from stall gate. Won driving; second and third the same. DEVALUE dropped back steadily for five-eighths, swung to the outside on the last turn, moved forward gradually under good pressure and, strongly handled, outfinished ROCKWOOD LOU. The latter, in hand from the start and taken back when between horses leaving the backstretch, swung to the inside when clear, came out sharply when racing strongly in the final eighth, caused much crowding, then held on well when straight, but could not withstand the winner and was disqualified for the fouling and placed third. REAL SHORT made the early pace under steady rating, came out slightly in the stretch, was sharply impeded while fighting it out gamely in the drive and never fully recovered. WINTER RULES, not persevered with when outrun, was eased when blocked, due to the swerving of horses before him entering the last eighth and otherwise might have finished closer up. DONNA BRAND, in hand to the stretch, rallied mildly, but was tiring when impeded inside the final eighth. VANFLAG weakened after forcing the pace to the last three-sixteenths. CLOSE UP, under good restraint early and quick to recover after being forced back on the second turn, raced into the lead with a rush and continued strongly to the end, winning with something left. SWIFT ACTION, allowed to rer in far back to the last three-eighths, raced wide thereafter and closed well.
