Connaught Drives Hard To Win Detroit Opener Prevails by Neck Margin Over Polaris in Six-Furlong Event FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 27. — Despite threatening weather and an "off" track, a crowd of about 13,000 Motor City patrons turned out for the eight -race purogram here today. The card was the first twilight bill presented during the current 1946 season and the enthusiastic response presaged the success of Michigans sport this year. Wagering moved along briskly throughout the matinee and Detroit Racing Association officials expressed complete satisfaction with the days business. Eight ordinary platers met in the initial six-furlong sprint and it resulted in a driving neck verdict for L. Goldstines Con-naught, who had the saddle services of Harry Hart. Mrs. J. Claude Sawyers well regarded Polaris finished second, two and one-half lengths before L. and R. J. Fischers favored Notforme, who was third. Con-naught bore in rather badly during the stretch run and appeared to interfere with Polaris but the latter could not overhaul the victor when he was clear near the finish. Connaught, making his first start since shipment here from Florida, ran the three-quarters over the slow strip in 1:15% and, third choice in the speculation, rewarded backers with a .20 tote pay-off.
