♦ Strike Continues At Belmont Park Waiters Expected to Join Others in Idleness; Eleven In Meadow Brook Chase BELMONT PARK, Elmont. L. I., N. Y., May 27. — Torrential rains and the strike of vanmen combined to delay the filling of entries for Belmont Parks program tomorrow and the fields are on the small side. Pickets were still present at the gates of all three Long Island tracks, but were conspicuous only at Aqueduct where track superintendent Frank Keogh saw to it that they walked in the rain. Several horses were vanned over from Jamaica and Aqueduct to Belmont over the week-end in vehicles driven by ex-service men who were allowed entry. The bartenders and admissions ticket sellers and most of the blacksmiths remained idle. Waiters employed by the Stevens Catering company held an election to determine a bargaining agent this morning. The waiters, bus boys and captains employed in the dining rooms and hot lunch counters voted approximately 3-1 to affiliate with the A. F. of L. There are 138 employes affected. This means that, unless the strike started by local 282 of the Teamsters and Chauffeurs union is settled tonight, which is unlikely, the waiters will have to join the bartenders in idleness tomorrow. The countermen at the sandwich, frankfurter and beer and soft drink stands are not yet affected. The feature event tomorrow is the 0,000 Meadowbrook Steeplechase Handicap, a 0,000 added test at about two miles and a half, and this gruelling contest has attracted a field of 11 of the best of the jumpers now in training. Mrs. Esther du-Pont Weirs Burma Road, winner of his two starts this year in impressive style, heads this field with 152 pounds. This is more weight than the gelded son of Link Boy has been able to carry successfully, but he is a vastly improved "chaser" and looms a solid choice. The others in the Meadobrook are W. H. Lipscombs Mercator, 150; Thomas T. Motts Floating Isle, 148; Rigan McKinneys Navigate, 144; Kent Millers War Battle and Miss Ella A. Wideners Iron Shot, 142 each; Mrs. F. A. Clarks Raylywn, 141: Brookmeade Stables Delhi Dan, 140; Mrs. Weirs Deanslaw, 138; Mrs. C. E. Adams Refugio, 133, and Mrs. Henry Obres Ben-eksar, 130. Mercator Beaten in Last Mercator won his first two starts of the season in Maryland, but failed here, failing in his last start when leading on the far side in last weeks Corinthian Handicap. Navigate showed considerably improved when finishing only a length back of Burma Road in the Corinthian after getting to the front on the final bend. He was 2 lto 1 in that race, but will probably have more support tomorrow. War Battle finished two lengths farther back in that race and a half dozen lengths before Delhi Dan. while Raylywn, Iron Shot and Floating Isle were among the also rans. Iron Shot, however, may be dangerous, as this veteran gray is one of the best chasers in training when at his best and usually needs a couple of races to show his good form. His last effort was much better than his annual debut. Meanwhile, interest in the stakes events that stud Belmonts final week is mounting rapidly. One engrossing problem is the next engagement of W. L. Branns hardhitting filly, Gallorette, who is engaged in both Wednesdays Top Flight Handicap and Thursdays Suburban. Saturdays 00,000 Belmont received added color when Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Mahout scored a stunning upset over Lord Boswell and a big field in Saturdays Peter Pan Handicap. Mahout was lightly burdened in that test and must pick up scale weight in this weeks mile and a half, but may be much better than rated. Apart from this fellow, the race seems to be a duel between King Ranchs Derby and Preakness winner Assault, and Lord Boswell. Though he has done all asked of him this year, except for one poor race, in the Derby Trial, Assault has not convinced most of the presumptive experts that he is a really good horse. A victory in the Belmont not only would complete the "Triple Crown" for the son of Bold Venture, but would convince the skeptics that he is a worthy champion.
