LUMPKIN, a prominent factor from the beginning, assumed command in the stretch, but could not stave off the winner. JEANNE BELLE, on the outside of the leaders from the beginning, hung nearing the finish, though having early speed. GRETCHEN raced evenly. SOME SWEEP could not menace the leaders. SCHOLARSHIP, in near pursuit of the pace, moved up stoutly under urging and was bumped nearing the final turn when the winner began to bear in. MAHMOUDESS was taken under restraint in the first part, but failed to gain on the leaders when urged. CHIEF BARKER was never a dangerous factor.
