Increase Value of Belmont Grand National to 5,000 NEW YORK, N. Y., June 11.— The Westchester Racing Association has announced increases in steeplechase purses for the autumn meeting at Belmont Park which will make the Grand National, feature of the steeplechase stakes at this meeting, the richest stake for jump horses in the country. This race, to be run October 3, is at about three miles over the steeplechase course and will have an added value of 5,000, the increase moving it up from 5,000 added — which had been the highest purse offered for steeplechasers in the country. This race, late in the season and at a longer distance than most of the others during the year, annually proves to be the most severe test of the jumpers. Two other Belmont fall steeplechase stakes have been increased in value so that the field horses will have the richest purses of recent years to shoot at. These are about two miles Broad Hollow, which goes from ,000 to 0,000 added, and the Brook, about two-and-a-half miles, increased from ,500 to 5,000 added. The Brook will be run first on Thursday, September 26, and the Broad Hollow Is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9.
