L. I., N. Y., June 25. The Pocantico Handicap, which was the richest event on Empire Citys off-day program at Jamaica proved a thrilling contest, with William Zieglers Bounding Home and Vera S. Braggs Proof Coil struggling head and head all through the stretch, with the Ziegler stallion prevailing by a short neck. Isadore Biebers Oatmeal finished a weary third at the end of the mile and a sixteenth, four lengths back of the runner-up and a length before Havahome Stables Omamax. Carr Hatchs Be Brief completed the small field, but he may have cost the front-running Proof Coil the race, carrying him along at a faster early clip than might otherwise have been necessary. Slightly favored over Proof Coil, Bounding Home paid .60 and was clocked in the good time of 1:44, with Venancio Nodarse urging him along. Crowd of 19,592 Sees Program A crowd of 19,592 turned out in ideal weather. There was a pleasant breeze in the Jamaica stands that tempered the heat, and the comparative lightness of the crowd made wagering comfortable for the lucks ones and tolerable for the others. A five-year-old gelding, who had once had class and a mare of the same age who has always had speed, drew all the support in the Eastchester Purse that was sixth on the program, and they ran almost to expectations, with George D. Wideners Lucky Draw getting up in the final stride to beat R. S. Howards Breezing Home, while the mare, Robert Greens Miss Black Out, finished a little more than a length away in third place, after cutting out a sizzling pace. Nine promising juvenile colts and geldings met in the Tuxedo Purse, first of three features on the card. E. P. Hertz Owners Choice, the favorite, by a half length. William Helis End of Strife also finished fast to take third honors a head back of the choice. Bounding Home had to be considerably urged in the Pocantico, being well back of the early pace cut out by Proof Coil and Be Brief, with only Omamax behind him as they turned into the backstretch. Midway of the far side, Proof Coil drew away from Oatmeal and Bounding Home. The three horses rounded the curve into the stretch almost on a line, with Proof Coil saving ground along the rail and briefly regaining a head lead over Bounding Home as they straightened away for the final duel. Oatmeal tired badly in the stretch, while Bounding Home soon collared Proof Coil and appeared about to draw away. At the eighth pole, the winner appeared to begin to sulk and bear in slightly, while Proof Coil was going stubbornly about his business. The result might have been even closer had Jessop not hit Proof Coil at the sixteenth pole, the gray appearing startled by the blow and checking stride momentarily.
