The McCIain Takes Detroit Opener Over Turf Course - FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 25. The first and last races at the Fair Grounds today were over the turf course and at the end of the about one mile test that opened the card it was G. Mavros gray, The McCIain, that earned a length margin over M. A. Silagy, Jr.s Tusco, while a half length back Valdina Rex was third for MacDonald Stable in the field of 10. The winner, who was coupled in the mu-tuel field with Polar Eve, was making his second local appearance over the turf course and was ridden by Joe Jacobs. He was timed in 1:40 and paid 6.40. The McCIain, who played a prominent part in a movie involving thoroughbreds, was pinched off sharply right at the start today, as Tusco was sent into a clear lead in the run for the first turn. Valdina Rex raced closest to the leader as the eventual winner gradually worked his way into closer contention. On the inside and saving ground, The McCIain moved up stoutly until, reaching the final turn, he was taken to the outside. Under pressure, he closed fast to oust Tusco from the lead in the final sixteenth. Tusco held on well when headed and was able to stave off the bid of Valdina Rex. Warm weather, clear skies and a fast track drew some 12,500 patrons.
